    Hello everyone:

I am trying to edit a footnote –

The problem I am having is that 2006 tends to jump to second line, for
example: This is only a test to use as an example – London Bridge renovations
    2006

The 2006 is suppose to be on the same line, I know that I could go to File,
Page Setup and change the margins, but that would change the entire document.

The margins are already at Top – 1.65 Bottom 1.52, & Left 2.54 Right 2.54
The only thing I can do is to lower the font to Arial 9, from Arial 10

    Thanks dillon

Word doesn’t have a “margin release” feature for a particular line, but you can change the right margin for a particular paragraph. This is set using Format>Paragraph…, Indentation, Right, and a negative value.

Alternatively, if you simply want to keep two words together, you can change the space between them to a non-breaking space. I’m not aware of any way to do this through a menu item, but you can select the space and type Ctrl+Shift+space. If you are displaying “formatting marks” for spaces (using Tools>Options…, View), you will see the “dot” change to a “circle” (actually, the same as a degree symbol, which can be a bit confusing…).

Another option is to change the distance between characters slightly, to make the text fit into the space available.
Select the whole text that should fit on the line and go to menu-item Format | Font… tab Distance and position (middle tab). Change the value under Characterdistance with a small number, i.e. 0,05 pt (default is 0), so that the width is slightly reduced.
As I have a Dutch version, I don’t know the exact names and labels in English and just translated from Dutch, maybe to literally. But maybe the screendump helps you to figure it out.

Here’s an English-language capture of that dialog for comparison. I selected the phrase “This is a test!” in the document before opening the dialog…

            Hello Jesher, Jan:

Thanks for providing those options, I have decided to change the right hand margin to 0.8. I had the opportunity to try the changes on a copy from the original document, and it seemed to solve the problem.

            Cheers
