The issue is that the folder icon has changed (on some PCs) from being yellow (which is how it has been since the launch of the new Edge)Imageto being transparent, and therefore much harder to see the icons:Image

Anyone else? Do you think Microsoft will fix?

When you say “Edge year in review update” what exactly was installed?

The browser opened and it proceeded to review all the things edge can do.

      It said YEAR IN REVIEW.

Here is a link on Microsoft with others having the same issue.

Something happened overnight and others are stating they have the same issue.

Hi, I am on windows 10 and have the same issue. Any fix for me?

    • #2727374

The same thing happened today to the Edge browser folder icons on my Windows 10 machine. Edge also updated today to version 131.0.2903.112. Maybe this update caused the icon change.

I’m going to guess it was the Edge update not the year in review triggering it.

I don’t use Edge as a daily driver, but today I took it for an impromptu spin and got the “year in review” tour.  I actually checked it out screen by screen just see what it was promoting. No comment on this.  Clicking the home button took me to my default “new tab page”.  Scrolling down shows the MSN news screen.  I run it with the dark theme it looked good.  Nothing was beached out or pale and everything worked well.  No surprises.

Thanks for posting about this as I was becoming convinced my memory/visual imagination were playing tricks with me. I also have the same issue but without seeing or going any where near the “Year in Review” thing. So I am assuming that a recent update to Edge has caused this. I am on version 131.0.2903.112.

      Yup, mine updated too.

It’s a chrome thing – it’s the same on the Google Chrome browsers at work. I also hate the transparent folder icons. Microsoft/Google/Chrome should make it so that WE choose the folder icons we want, that way those that love the transparent icons can still have them and the rest of us can change them back to Yellow or a colour of OUR choice.

I have the same problem. My favourite folders in Edge are now grey! I’ve looked in ‘Settings’, but there does not appear to be a way of changing the folder colour. The contents are still accessible, but not sure why the folder colour has changed.

Looks like you are right!  I just saw this a short time ago and don’t find that it’s been posted here yet.  This link also includes a fix.

The tip in the link @TechTango posted works great for Edge v131.0.2903.112!

I checked the code for Edge using a Hex Editor and discovered the msFavoritesMonolineFolder command is located in the msedge.dll file.

Since Edge is based on Chromium, I checked for a similar command in Google Chrome’s chrome.dll but had no luck locating anything related to Favorites, Monoline, Folder, or Bookmarks (which is Chrome’s name for Favorites.)

Hopefully there’s also such a command for Chrome and someone will figure it out and post it on the internet.

I found this work around on a Microsoft forum and it worked for me. I have my yellow folders back. Yay! The key is launching Edge from the shortcut that is modified with the additional code. In my case I repined that modified shortcut to my task bar.

      Temporary workaround mentioned here >

This fix does not work for Dev channel build 133.0.3014.0. So, it may be that it is really temporary.

After adding the –disable-features bit to the Target of the shortcut, go into Edge settings > System and performance > turn off Startup boost.
