Yep, and I’ve already come across that bug: Edge won’t acknowledge that I’ve set the startup page to anything, from about:blank to askwoody.com!

It insists on showing me its new tab page, no matter what! Good thing I’ve disabled web content in said page with settings within Group Policy, thanks to having the Pro edition of Windows 10.

This is on a system that is fully updated to version 19042.985 Pro x64 with Edge version 91.0.867.37.

My guess is that this can be fixed with a registry tweak in just the right spot in order for Edge to again respect the setting of opening to a specific page. Chances are that the setting in the UI, while showing one’s correct preference of wanting to open to a specific page, doesn’t make it through to the right spot in the registry like it’s supposed to.

Since I have Windows 10 Pro, I’ve looked through the applicable settings within GPEdit under Windows Components>Microsoft Edge to no avail. Changing the preferences that looked like they might help was to no avail. Some settings for startup also are dependent upon Windows 10 being domain-joined, per the descriptions for some settings in GPEdit.

EDIT: No, I’m NOT about to change my default search engine within Edge to Bing just to go back to my default page upon starting Edge! MS loused it up, they can fix it! Or, preferably, someone here who has a decent knowledge of the way Edge works within the registry can please help us out by telling us which registry key (or keys) that needs (or need) tweaking.

This will fix it for you:
Locate the following path “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\your version of Edge\Installer”
Open an elevated Command Prompt. From C:\Windows\System32 prompt
Substitute your version of Edge in this command in place of “89.0.774.68”

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\89.0.774.68\Installer\setup.exe" --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

Gone. No more problems.

Thanks! Although it will help some folks, I don’t feel like force-uninstalling Edge at this point.

I firmly believe that there’s a registry-based temporary work around until (preferably) Microsoft fixes the code to re-enable us to have the search engine of our choice and the start page of our choice.

Be careful, if you don’t completely get Edge uninstalled it causes patches to not install. Make sure all edge folders have been removed.

Thanks, Susan, but I currently have no plans to force-uninstall Edge. However, it is nice to have a ready reference from @PKCano to fall back on if the need arises. I’m sincerely hoping it won’t.

Thanks for the additional heads-up on checking for any left-over folders for those who choose to go down that path.

The first time I executed that command, I did it from the folder that contained the Edge setup.exe file. It caused the problem error code 0x800f0922 because you can’t delete the folder you are sitting in. (Duh!! I knew that))
When I executed the command from the default path that Cmd.exe opens in (C:\Windows\System32), it worked without error (did not cause an update failure with error code 0x800f0922).

I removed Edge before since it tried to force me to set it up, blocking me from using my computer–no way to bypass other than terminating the program.

But it came back in an update, and has stayed out of my way now, and doesn’t even seem to have any programs running. If it’s going to keep resealing itself and stays out of my way, I’ll just leave it alone like I did Internet Explorer and old Edge.

For those in the know, could there be a way to edit a configuration file that Edge uses that may produce the desired results of having the start page of one’s choice and the search engine of their choice, thereby working around the mis-behavior of Edge 91?

I’m asking, because it dawned on me that perhaps there is another way to change Edge’s behavior besides digging into the registry.

Edge updated to version 91.0.864.37 and now Edge opens with the Microsoft tab page instead of
https://duckduckgo.com/ which is the “On startup” setting in Edge. For many months I have used the following Edge settings to force Edge tabs to use DuckDuckGo for search:

>Settings
>Privacy, search, and services (then scroll down to the Services section)
>Address bar and search
>Search engine used in address bar (https://duckduckgo.com/)
>Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar
>Address bar

Even though tabs display “Microsoft” DuckDuckGo is used for search.

Yesterday the Edge startup page was a Microsoft tab even though the startup page specified in Edge settings was DuckDuckGo. At that time the Edge version was 91.0.864.37.

Today the Edge startup page is once again DuckDuckGo. The Edge version is the same as it was yesterday and I have not changed any Edge settings. Sort of mysterious, but I am happy that the startup page is what I want it to be.

Mothball Edge as in never run or use it. But keep it on the system in case Microsoft pulls some shenanigans with future updates and or patches/features.

Try using the Firefox browser. It is probably the most user friendly and less user data hungry mainstream browser out there.

Microsoft gets so worked up about people using alternative browsers. That they offer to fix your browser expersience on top of the Windows settings menu. With a big icon that makes it look like your doing something harmfull to your computer when using an alternative browser.

I have Edge (which I seldom use) set to “continue where you left off” so it opens all the tabs I had open (vertical, down the left side) when I last closed it but it will not open to the tab I was on when I closed it. Instead, it opens to a blank new tab. That’s a bug (assuming Microsoft understands the meaning of “continue where you left off”)!

I also see a problem reintroduced that I had previously but not had recently. That is that the Edge settings page cuts off in the middle of Customize Fonts! Plus, Edge now warns me that my chosen font that I have used as default since 1999 (Verdana) may not work properly! It seems to work ok but then I don’t use Edge often to easily notice a potential problem with it.

At least I can use Stylus to change the unvisited link color. I have always changed it in every browser until Edge which has no settings for this.

I rarely use Edge, but I just checked. For me, it still opens on my selected home page (which is a HTML file on my own computer) and still uses DDG. (Version 91.0.864.37 (Official build) (64-bit))

I found a workaround to the problem. Go to Settings : Appearance : Show home button and toggle between the two settings, in my case from my set homepage to new tab and then back again to the set homepage. For whatever reason, problem solved, homepage on startup worked again.

I did the following and things are now working as expected with my Startup settings being respected.  Note, I already had Bing set as my default search engine and Edge was not my default browser.

Paste this in the address bar:

edge://flags/#edge-show-feature-recommendations

Disable the flag and restart your browser.  (Originally set to Default)

Interesting to note that when I set this flag back to its original Default setting, things STILL work properly!!  So perhaps the Disable triggered something else which got corrected.  I did this on two PC’s and got identical results!
