Just noticed the following installed, or attempted to be installed, by today’s Edge Update:

    Folder in temp: chrome_Unpacker_BeginUnzipping6356_1553015614

Files inside (among others): buynow_driver.js  crypto.bundle.js

Any idea what this installs and what it is allowing to be bought? And from where? I assume Edge and hope not other places in the OS.

Some files have the words “subscription” when viewed plain text.

There was no Edge update today; the last was four days ago.

Why do you think these files were installed by Edge Update?

      • #2665682

Happened at exactly the same moment as the 8:01 AM Edge updates today. Unless EdgeBits is not an indication of an update, but something else Edge. And I was not usuong Edge when these arrived.

        1edge
        2edge

May not be due to an Edge update:

Windows 10/11: Edge fills up the Temp folder with Edge_BITS_xxx files

I don’t have those folders or files after the latest Edge update.

            Well, I do 🙂

So, could be a Windows update, but I have all Windows Updates blocked. And Edge mentioned in the files. So I’m saying this is caused by Edge. Even the Windows Tasks installed by Edge point to it checking for updates every morning. So while it may not be updating the Edge executable, it is updating or trying to add a feature. And as we all know, these things are staggered so no surprise you may not have seen it yet.

Another clue – Edge is the only Chrome browser I have. Nothing else would be looking for a “chrome unpacker”, especially with some files inside having “edge” in their names.

So, back to anyone know what Buy Now function it is trying to add? I ask so I can find if it is blackable or uninstallable. I have no desire for Edge to have my financial info.

All those files in your 2nd screen shot are part of the Payment methods section of Edge’s “Microsoft Wallet” function

buynow_driver.js is used for the Buy Now button that gets displayed if you use the Edge Shopping feature.

To disable it, open edge and enter edge://wallet/settings in the URL bar and turn OFF the Show Buy now, pay later option on sites when you shop slider under payment options.

Since you indicated you “have no desire for Edge to have my financial info“, you should also turn OFF the Save and fill payment info and Show Express checkout on sites when you shop sliders.

Thanks for that. Off to adjust.

        @n0ads

Thanks for the explanation of just what these files should be for. That explains why I don’t have them…I completely disabled all of that (stuff) in Group Policy some time ago when I first noticed it in Edge, making it show up in Edge’s settings screens as greyed out and disabled (slider turned OFF)!  😉

I don’t have those folders or files after the latest Edge update.

I do on Windows 10 Pro 22H2 Edge Version 124.0.2478.67 with yesterday’s date.
