Edge Profile icon location changed

Just noticed that Microsoft moved the location of the Profile icon in Edge v120.0.2210.61 from the right-side in the toolbar to the top-left in the title bar.

There’s also new Profile icon options in Settings > Appearance > Customize toolbar.

The first one allows you to move the icon back to the toolbar.

Not sure exactly what the second one does as it has no effect on my system?

I don’t see it in up-to-date Version 120.0.2210.77 (Official build) (64-bit) and no new options for it in Settings > Appearance > Customize toolbar, either.
But I do see it in Version 121.0.2277.4 (Official build) beta (64-bit) and the new options are there, too.

Ok, I just checked and, even thought they’re both running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 (Build 19045.3693) and have Edge Version 120.0.2210.77 (Official build) (64-bit) installed, the Edge Profile icon on my Laptop is still in the old location and there’s no option under appearance to move it!

I guess this must be one of those Microsoft changes that are only being rolled out to “select” users right now.

So, since I share the same internet connection for both my PC’s (i.e. the public IP address is the same for both of them), exactly how was my Desktop selected to get it but my Laptop wasn’t?

Just FYI, neither of them have even been subscribed to Microsoft’s insider program nor allow preview updates to be installed.

I’ve got two Win 10 Pro x64 22H2 machines fully updated (but currently waiting for the December patch pending Susan’s say-so) and both with Edge and Edge Webview2 sitting at version 120.0.2210.77.

Funny thing is, one machine’s installation of Edge has included the relocated profile icon option since just after updating to 120, whereas the other one has no hint of the option’s existence yet!

Go figure! More MS dribblenomics!

This U-turn after 18 months is documented:

Find your Edge profile in the toolbar. With multiple tabs open, the tab strip is valuable space for you to find the right tabs quickly. To increase visibility of tab titles, we have moved the Profile pill to the toolbar. It will also appear as a minimized icon only, without a text label, by default. Admins can use the ProfileTypeInProfileButtonEnabled policy to control whether the label for the work or school profile type is shown in the profile button.
