Well I was interested in HD Sentinal for free from the above site but ‘likeing’ on Facebook is a prerequisite. I know ‘ don’t look the gift horse in the mouth’ and all that but I have managed to stay away from FB so far and passed on the offer. I am I alone in my disregard for Facebook ??

I fail to understand the loathing of Facebook. You can use it for whatever purpose you wish. By having liked from quite a few news and tech related sites, Facebook is a primary mean for me to obtain information. I also use to keep tabs on some friends located far away and it serves for that purpose very well.

So, you can use what may seem not such an enticing tool in a good way. I would surely not close my FB account for any reason and, as I said, I totally fail to understand its loathing.

am I alone in my disregard for Facebook

No. I don’t mind if others use it, my wife included, but I find it’s a great time-waster and I for one have other things to do. I did have to visit it once but only to see some pictures my son had posted of his teams and sleds.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

      Wavy,

I use Bits Du Jour quite a bit and there is always an optional method for non-FB users, you just have to search for it but it is there.

What RG said. I picked up the free HD Sentinal without using Facebook.

      I don’t use FB.

I was a user of the Trial version of HD Sentinel until I had the good fortune to win a copy of the Pro version. TBH, I’m not sure there’s anything from the Pro version that I actually use, or would miss if I had to revert to the Trial version. I’d certainly miss HDS if I didn’t have it at all!

      2. GRANT OF LICENSE

This EULA grants you the following rights:

      a. You can install the non-registered evaluation version of the software for a trial period of 30 days on any number of computers.
During the trial period, you have the rights to use the available functions of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, make copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT for backup and archival purposes and evaluate hardware and software compatibility PRIOR registration.
For supported hardware and software which allow detection and display of disk information, please check the Support area of the website.

For non-business (home, personal) use, the trial period may be extended.

      b. In business environments after the trial period of 30 days you MUST register the software to get a full licensed version or you must remove and destroy all copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT you have made.

      c. The license you obtain grants the following rights:

      i) You may install and use one copy of the Software, on a single computer with a single license

ii) You may store or install a copy of the Software on a storage device, such as a floppy/ZIP/CD/DVD/USB storage or network server; however, you must acquire and dedicate a license for each separate Computer on which the Software is run.

iii) Corporate license: if you bought Corporate license package, you may install and use as many copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT as you have purchased in the Corporate package.
You have the rights to make copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT for backup and archival purposes.

A license for the Software may not be shared or used concurrently on different Computers.

Apart from the the cases described above, you do not have a licensed copy and you are not allowed to use the full functionality of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

(my bold above) My take on the EULA is that as a non-business user you are allowed to run one copy of the Trial on a single computer.

The great part of the USA, to each his own.

The great part of the USA, to each his own.

I won’t dispute that, but there is no need to loath it, just because it is not liked by someone or someone else thinks it is bad. I have always believed in making my own evaluations, regardless of the respect I have for other people’s opinions. Not surprisingly, I see much criticism from people who don’t have first hand experiences on what they criticize, be that Facebook or whatever else…

Back to the subject, I got a free version of HD Sentinel through Facebook. Just last month I upgraded it to the professional version for a very small amount (around $20, for 5 licenses, I think).

      Portable version (no installation required)

      Complete surface analysis, refresh, reinitialise

Re pro vs standard the first is of interest and the second is a point of confusion on my part but does seem to be a good thing.
While reading on their site I came across this:http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

The issue is very common with Marvell 91xx controllers. Because the driver of these Marvell controllers has several problems, it may be better to replace it with Windows “Standard AHCI Controller” in the following way:
      – open Windows Device Manager and locate the Marvell 91xx SATA 6G Controller (AHCI).
      – try the update driver option and select to use “Standard AHCI Controller” driver for the controller.
After this change and restart of the system, TRIM will be really working and reported by Hard Disk Sentinel.

As I am thinking I have one of these controllers I will look into it.

Standard MS AHCI controller is preferable every time, especially if you need TRIM on an SSD 🙂 Even for Intel controllers, cleaner is better.
