    Hi Loungers!

After having great success with Easeus Partition Master {recommended here} I decided to give Easeus ToDo Backup Free a try. I did my best to do an objective review comparing it to Acronis 2010 Home {not free} my current imaging solution. Here for your edification and comment are my findings.

    Acronis True Image 2010 Baseline:
Bootable Recovery Media – CD works great and allows images to be made w/o Windows running.
    Backup Time w/Verification: 35 Minutes
    Backup Size: 29 Gb.
    Restoration Time: 19 Minutes
    Restoration Accuracy: Perfect

    EaseUs ToDo Backup Free {current version}
Bootable Recovery Media – USB works great but does NOT allow images to be made w/o Windows running.
    Backup Time w/Verification: 30 Minutes
    Backup Size: 30 Gb.
    Restoration Time {1st try}: 1 Hour!
Restoration Accuracy {1st try}: Worked but something wasn’t perfect as my RoboForm License was missing. All my data was there but it thought I was still on trial and my trial period was up so it wouldn’t allow me to access more than 10 of my passwords!
Restoration Time {2nd try}: 1.5 Hour, I cancelled a this point thinking something was wrong with the image.
    — Restored from the Acronis image —
    — ReImaged using EaseUs ToDo Backup —
    Restoration Time {3rd try}: 2 Hours!
Restoration Accuracy {3rd try}: Same results as 1st try

    — Restored once again w/Acronis 19 Minutes!!!

    Conclusions:
Since I depend heavily on RoboForm I’ll be sticking with Acronis. The 3 restorations I did with Acronis during this test all worked flawlessly! So I guess this is a case of you get what you pay for!

    Regrets:
One of the features of ToDo is the ability to resize partitions as you restore. I didn’t test this feature but would have if the restorations has been successful…a feature I’d like to have.
I liked the bootable USB {using Linux like Acronis boot CD} but missed the ability to do my images from this feature.
I also like free but only if it works!

May the Forces of good computing be with you!

RG, thanks for the very informative info. I also use both Acronis 2010 (wife’s PC) and Acronis 2011 (my PC) Both have performed flawlessly on every attempt at restoration. These restorations tend to occur more freequently on my PC as I do a lot more experimentation on my PC. My feeling is that if something works well for you, you stick with it, and I will stick with Win 7 and Acronis True Image Home.

      Fred,

We all understand that you prefer a security suite and that you think that MSE is inferior. That is fine. Don’t you think it is about time to stop the disparaging naming convention you’ve assumed? MSE has never claimed to be a suite. It is an anti-virus and anti-spyware solution that has been well received. It does what it says, is unobtrusive, is light on system resources, and is free. It is meant for those people who:

1.) don’t care about the seemingly infinte options and complexity in most suites or
2.) have not installed a/v software or
3.) don’t want to pay for this type of software

      Let’s just let this go.

        Joe,
Hello…. I never said that it doesn’t “do the job” … what i have stated ( and will continue to bring out) is to let everyone who is interested know that compared to a real security suite…. MSE is in reality “Mickey Mouse” hence the”Mickey MSE” Just as many of the MS offerings can’t compare to the 3rd party offerings…. What ? should we all face “Redmond” and bow down and all fall in line and worship “MS” …. or is a forum a place to get and exchange ideas and information … My opinions and findings have always been contrary to “common wisdom ” How will the “average user” in your examples ever learn anything , if all they hear is a constant one note “drum beat” How wonderful MSE is. Don’t you think that they should hear the “other side” of an argument . Sometimes Humor “Mickey MSE” is what is needed to get someones attention… Pointing out the shortcomings of that program will help them to see that there are many better alternatives …all for the hideous price of about 2$ USD a month..If all you wish is a one sided argument …how wonderful all things MS are… then have me removed and banned …. I’ll demand my money back
        Regards Fred

I don’t care if you continue to express your opinion on how wonderful you believe NIS to be compared to anything. You are correct in that information should be presented to let users form their own opinions. I just don’t think it is humorous or useful to continue to denigrate a product in the way you’ve chosen. MSE is not designed to be a security suite. It has not and is not presented as a security suite. As well as I can remember all I’ve ever said about MSE is that it has been well received by people who review software for a living, and from my experience it works well for me with little impact on system resources. I do not believe that I’ve ever said it was better than any other product – suite or individual A/V application.

I don’t care what vendor you or anyone else chooses to use for software as long as it works. Whether it is from Microsoft, Norton, or any other vendor is irrelevant to me. If I see software that I think is interesting and generally useful I’ll post about it.

        Joe ,
Hello… That’s kinda my point … (from now on i won’t refer to MSE as “Mickey MSE” Hence forth i will only refer to MSE as “Minnie MSE” Only kidding) In all the reviews it’s presented as the best thing that MS has ever done and maybe it is… …. (and did i mention it’s low fat? ) that’s the problem. “They” give the impression that it is the “top of the line ” for security. So i point out that “Minnie” is anemic in all categories but one . Whats wrong with that ? I,…. as you say “denigrate”, …and i call it … pointing out with humor.. Hey “lighten up ” or you will give us “Geeks” a bad reputation for being humorless as well as Nerds. Regards Fred

          Fred,

You do come up with curious definitions. Now MSE is guilty of not being something Microsoft never meant it to be. That’s curious criticism.
I guess if they did it like NIS, someone else would call them out for being having a bloated app (33 diferent functions, according to a Fred Langa’s WS column).
I would almost bet that if they did it anyway you would call them out for it yourself. “More Redmond bloat”. Gosh, I think I can almost see it . I need to stop hanging out here for so long .

          Regards

          Rui
