We use BT Midband ISDN to access the internet. I recently rebuilt my HD and reinstalled my programmes. Now, using Tesco as my e-mail providr I cannoy send e-mnail to earthlink.net – I get the message “550 relaying mail to earthlink.net is not allowed”

Is there anything I can do to remedy this.

    Other mail is working fine

Is a Tesco server set up as your SMTP (outgoing) server in all accounts, regardless of where you retrieve mail from? If not, try that first.

Thanks for the response – yep Tesco is set up on all accounts – I have sent mails successfully from this account to other Tesco accounts – seems external ones may have the problem.

I have just got this from the Tesco web site – seems I must be connected to Tesco.web to send mail

        1. You are not connecting to Tesco.net when trying to send Email. This will give an error code of 550 or ‘Relaying mail is not allowed’.

To resolve this problem, connect to Tesco.net and then try to send your Email.

Kinda sux, anybody got any work arounds?

        Thanks

I read your original message wrong, sorry. You are using a BT account for your internet connection? You need to set the BT account’s SMTP server as your SMTP server while you are connected to BT. Preventing non-account holders from sending through an SMTP server is an almost universal anti-spam measure. The two ways the server can verify you are an account holder are (1) your originating IP address (on their network) or (2) supplying credentials (e.g., Tesco could let you send through its server while not on its network if you supply your username and password, possibly via SSL, they would tell you this somewhere). There is no other workaround known to honest users. smile
