Previously Outlook would offer a drop down box with an e-mail address when I typed so many characters of an e-mail address. This feature has worked for years. Today it has stopped working.

After some trouble shooting, the drop down box will appear for any e-mail addresses that I have already typed during the current session of Outlook–but these e-mail addresses in the drop down boxes disappear when I close and re-open Outlook [i.e. if I type jsmith@yahoo.com in outlook the next time it offers a drop down once I type the first few letters—but once I close and re-open Outlook I again need to type the full e-mail address the first time and then for that session of Outlook, it “remembers” this e-mail address.

I have re-booted several times…nothing seems to fix the problem. I have done nothing unusual to the PC today and I have not installed any new software in the last 3 months. Does any one know where Outlook stores the “e-mail drop down list”? Everything else in Outlook appears to be working normally. I have tried stuff in the other Microsoft suite software and they appear ok [Excel, Word, Powerpoint].

I am really baffled at why this feature stopped working today and more baffled on how to “fix” it to work again. All suggestions are welcome….Thanks.

The autocomplete list is stored in a file with the name of your e-mail profile (default is ‘Outlook’) and extension .nk2. It is stored in a hidden folder, for Windows XP it is located in C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook.
Your description makes me think that the .nk2 file has become corrupt. The easiest solution is to quit all instances of Outlook, then delete the .nk2 file. Outlook will create a new one automatically. The downside is that you will lose all currently stored ‘nicknames’.
There is software that claims to be able to repair corrupt .nk2 files (NK2 File Management Software Suite) but I don’t know how good it is, and it is not free.

Thanks for the correct name…autocomplete—no wonder I really could not search the forum or google for help…I won’t even begin to tell you my search terms. I deleted the file as you suggested…and now it seems to be working again–at least for the first 5 e-mails I have tried. So when I close and re-open, the autocomplete is “remembering” the previous e-mail addresses again. You are a genious. Thank you so much for your help. Appreciated. Happy New Year!
