I use an old program – last updated 2009 by the looks of it – which is able to identify CD/DVD’s by data impregnated on a disc.

Doesn’t work so well now – I’m guessing the database is old, or some other problem.

Anyone familiar with a utility which will do this?  Some DVD or CD blanks are just that -very blank – and it is nice to firmly identify exactly what sort of media it is.

ps only relevant to the luddites still using such antiquated media!

    Thanks Richard

It still works just fine but, to avoid the Unable To Retrieve Version Info From The Internet. error, you have to disable the “Check For Updates Each Time On Start-Up” option under the On-Line menu item.

Yes it still uses the old 10-jan-09 manufacturer’s database (the manufacturers_v3.dat file in the Data folder of the installation location on your system) but there really haven’t been many, if any, new DVD manufacturers since then and it does still properly ID disc as shown in the below screenshot for one of my own discs.

BTW, the link you posted is wrong!

      It’s http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com (it doesn’t work if you use https://

      Thanks for this.

Yes, it works – I think the reason that I was having problems was that I was checking a blank CD, and not DVD – and it works only for DVD/BD’s I guess.  (I wonder why he limited it to that?  Doesn’t matter.)

Yes, seems like CD/DVD type storage is not an expanding field. I’ve too many blanks that I bought ‘in the day’ that I now need to find a home for!

Dunno why the https/ showed up:  must have been a cut/paste operation, but indeed that site doesn’t work.

      Thanks for your clarifications!
