I have two DVD R/W drives and one drive is not recognizing CD’s or DVD’s blank or previously recorded disks. My O/S is Windows 7.

      Junk1t,

Try going into Device Manager and deleting the drive. Then reboot and let Windows rediscover the drive. I often have this problem with one of my machines after doing Windows update and this procedure always fixes it. HTH

Also, see if the infamous upper/lower filters problem is not the issue:

If someone wants to try the “Take out Filters” fix, here it is, in easy to download form.

This little script has repaired many a PC for me, where the CD/DVD drive had seemed to just disappear.
Run the script and then reboot. It only takes a few seconds and chances are real good that the problem will be fixed.

      Good Luck,

There’s also a “fixit” at the Microsoft site in the link I gave above.

Had the same problem when I installed a second DVD R/W. After some time trying to get it to work, removed it and replaced it with a DVD read only.
No more problems. XP would not handle 2 R/Ws.

Where did that come from? My PC, running XP-Pro-SP3, handles two DVD R/W drives, just fine.
          No problemo amigo!

DVD drives burn out lasers too. I’ve had drives that work with CDs, but not DVDs. The only thing you can do is change the drive…

Yep. If you’ve got a laptop, I highly recommend DiscountedLaptopParts.com A used H-P CD/DVD R/W cost me $12.20 post paid, installed in 30 seconds, and worked perfectly, both CD and DVD, R and W! Likewise, a used keyboard was $8.28ppd, installed in less than 5 minutes, looked virtually unused, and functioned perfectly. (H-P has detailed service manuals on line, to show you what to do.) One very inexpensive repair job!

This is a great website! I wish I had known about this several years ago, when I broke the keyboard connector on my wife’s laptop motherboard.

My solution was to get a Targus foldup USB keyboard that she could carry around in her laptop carrying case. Cost was $50.

I had a problem once with an IDE DVD drive. In fact, I tried a couple of different IDE DVD drives; all had problems. I then went with a SATA DVD drive, and it’s been working now for a couple of years.

If the bad drive is IDE, try a SATA drive to see if the problem goes away.
