• DVD drive doesn’t see DL DVD’s

I have a 2014 Dell box with the factory installed DVD drive, software has been upgraded from W8.1 to W10 and I am using WinX DVD Author program for creating and burning. I am able to burn the regular 4.7 GB single layer DVD’s without problem. However, when I attempt to burn the 8.4 GB Double Layer DVD’s the drive doesn’t recognize the blank DVD.

    Thoughts?

Who’s the manufacturer and what’s the model number of your DVD?

Click Start, type in msinfo32.exe and press [Enter], then look under Components > CD/DVD.

the drive has to be compatible with Double Layer DVDs. Yours probably isn’t, but we’ll be able to tell when you answer SpywareDr’s question.

Btw, SpywareDr made a typo, it’s msinfo32.exe, not .ese

        Oops, thanks Lugh. Fixed.

Did this work before the upgrade? If so, then you might need a new driver.

Just the other day I had a client’s Notebook to be cleaned up and saved her 6.2GB music Folder to a portable HDD then used my Desktop to burn a DVD+R/DL disc. It was readable in her DVD drive. For burning DVD+R/DL discs I’ve had good success with ODDs that have the DL or DualLayer marked on the face of the tray, most Notebooks may not have that marking so, as mentioned, would need to know more about the hardware.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

Hmmm, can’t seem to locate the specifications for your drive.

You might try using Imgburn to determine the capabilities of your optical drive. After you’ve downloaded and installed it, start the program, click on “Discovery” (bottom right), then up on the Menu at the top, click on “Tools”, then “Drive”, then “Capability” (down near the bottom).

If your drive has Dual-Layer Write Capabilities, you should see checkmarks next to each of the DVD’s that have a trailing “DL” in their name under the “Write Capabilities” column on the right. For example:

(Note that the above drive does not have “DVD+RW DL” write capabilities).

So, you’re drive should have the following three Dual-Layer Read/Write capabilities:

      DVD-R DL
      DVD-RW DL
      DVD+R DL

It cannot however Read or Write to:

      DVD+RW DL

discs. (Only “-” RW DL, not “+” RW DL).

What I am using are DVD+R DL

Have been using Memorex and Phillips

This $20 ASUS burner works with Memorex DVD+R DL discs. (Don’t know about Philips).
