I’m looking for a program to copy homemade DVDs in Windows 7. I frequent record my daughter’s volleyball game and other parents would like a copy of the DVD. There doesn’t seem to be any Windows 7 utility to do this. I tried the ashampoo option, but this failed miserably in Win 7. I’m using Win 7 Home Premium on one PC and Win 7 Ultimate on another. Thanks in advance!

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 11, 2010 at 11:28 am #1208960Hi Joe and welcome to the Lounge!
I copied one of my homemade DVD movies recently in Windows 7. I shot the movie with a Panasonic DV camcorder. I used “Windows DVD Maker” that comes with Win7. I copied the video files from the original DVD to a folder in my Video Library, fired up Windows DVD Maker and clicked on “Add items” which opened an Explorer screen to select the video file. Windows DVD Maker imported the video file fine, and after burning a new DVD it displayed an option to save the session so I could make additional copies easily without having to go through the process all over again. The movie played on Windows Media Player and my DVD player connected to our TV.
I do not know the full potential of Windows DVD Maker as I have only used it to make a copy without attempting to add any frills or customizations.
Hope this helps.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 15, 2010 at 7:55 am #1209416Update – I used imgburn this weekend and it worked great! (Thanks Nathan). If you have already created a DVD (i.e. kids volleyball games), this is an easy way to make multiple copies. I hooked my Panasonic DV camcorder to my PC via firewire and did some testing with Windows 7 Live Movie Maker. While it was very easy to use and has some neat effects and transitions, there are some items to be aware of. First, it will only save in a .wmv or .avi format. I was hoping to be able to save in a .mpeg2 or .mpeg4 format for efficiency. Second, it can’t combine clips (recall this is the new “Live” version). This is a major negative. The import function isn’t perfect so there are a lot clips I need to combine. My next program to try is Videostudio 11SE (came w my firewire card) and possibly Pinnacle. Any other free or low cost video input/editing recommendations are appreciated. Thanks again!

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 15, 2010 at 4:05 pm #1209468Pinnacle Studio is probably the best clip conbiner/editor. Its the best that I use because it analyzes video and automatically breaks it into logical and easy to edit clips.
If the clips are ready to go as is, then just about any editor that will allow combining and is compatible with the desired output format will do.
Pinnacle has a free app called VideoSpin I think, but I don’t know how capable it is.
