Win98SE, 98Mb RAM, Lucent Winmodem
My mum always told me that “what you don’t know can’t hurt you”. I found this out after reading a magazine article about the Windows System Monitor. Just for fun I was running this when I was on the ‘Net and found that when I hung up, the CPU usage shot up to 70%.
By going through an elimination process of rebooting and then not loading my Internet applications I have determined that it is my DUN connection. From a fresh boot, with the system monitor running, I can run the DUN which dials up (with the appropriate CPU activity). Once the connection is made the CPU activity drops to idle. If I then hang up the CPU activity shoots up to 70% and sits there. If I dial up again the CPU activity drops to idle again once the connection is made.
If I look at the processes running in the 70% state using the only extra process I can see is RNAAPP. If I kill that from there is little, if any, drop in the CPU activity.
I’m not sure whether this is a Windows DUN problem or not. (I’ve Googled and tried to get the latest driver for my modem). Would anybody be able to help here? In WinNt the Task Manager allows you to see what processes are running. Is there something similar for Win98? TIA
