Are you able to open windows explorer and navigate to your programs root directory folders to attempt to execute a program from there?
Please list all programs you have removed with Revo.

A mild registry repair utility may fix broken file associations.
Attempt to access system restore from safemode.

      Langa Letter: XP’s No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option
This may not resolve the problem with accessing your programs.

hi clint .. to tell you the truth i only removed 2 or 3 programs and don’t remember their names .. one was a recording utility, not audacity, but similar and the last one i removed was ‘google chrome’ .. it was right after that everything went haywire .. i tried to get to system restore from safe mode but got nothing at all when i clicked on it .. when i click on windows explorer i also get nothing .. i’m sorry for being such a bone head and embarassed to be showing it .. oh well .. i’ll blame it on age .. i just checked fred’s article and can only get as far as the “F8 to accept licensing agreement” .. i hit the F8 key until the cows came home and nothing .. couldn’t even get out of there and had to hold the power button until the pc shut down .. i fear i have really messed it up .. dave .. hallelulia or however you spell it .. and bless you clint .. i did the “regedit” thing from the “broken exe” link you gave me and i have everything back!! .. thanks so much .. i was set to take the pc to a shop tomorrow .. whew .. you sure saved my bacon .. dave

Consider doing a drive image backup for future security & peace of mind.

There are many brands of backup and or imaging software applications for Windows XP.
There are also many folks here that can provide feedback and support in the area of computer back up and restore solutions.

We invite you to ask any and all such questions in the Security & Backups section of the lounge at your leisure.

This would probably be a good time to open up the computer and clean out all the dust bunnys from your CPU, Video card, and Power supply heatsinks and/or fans with compressed air. If possible, hold the fan blades to keep it from overspinning and ruining the bearings while blowing them out.

In Start > Run enter –
      sfc /scannow
This will check all the system files and replace any that are missing, damaged or the wrong version.
