Dual Boot with XP?

Hi,

I gave WinXP on my PC.
Can I also now install Win98 & dual boot?

Does Win98 HAVE TO BE on a separate partition/hard disk?

As for the dual booting, is this setup automatically by the Win98 installer, or do I have to set it up myself manually & if so, is it using a Microsoft tool, or one from a 3rd party?

[/indent]No, the Windows 98 installer will not set it up for you. It will replace your XP boot loader with its own. To install 98 now that XP is already there, you would need to run 98 setup, and then re-install XP on top of itself (an in-place upgrade). It’s a clunky way to do it but it’s the only way to preserve your existing installation of XP and not spend money on disk partitioning tools.

On every system that I have worked on that did not have each OS in a different partition, there has been nothing but problems. Do not plan on updating either OS, this includes the Windows Updates from MS. They will start to conflict with each other.

I am more than happy to install Win98 on another hard disk.
If I do so, can I install it such that I don’t have to reinstall XP?

I have spent umpteenth hours customising my XP and Apps & don’t want to reinstall as it will cause me countless hours getting things back to the way I want them.
Pls. advise.

Your easiest solution may then be to use something like Partition Magic.

I didn’t see this mentioned so I thought I would chime in. If you want to install Windows 98 and have a separate partition (STRONGLY recommended), you can run 98 setup, get it installed, and then boot with the XP CD-ROM and perform a repair of the boot sector. To force Windows 98 to appear in the list of available operating systems you will need to edit the BOOT.INI file and add the option.

Also note that any NTFS partitions will effectively not exist under Win98, so if your boot drive is NTFS, your life just got all the much more interesting.

‘scuse me for asking, but is the reason for wanting win98 something to do with a peripheral that is incompatible with XP?
I haven’t dared upgrade, for fear my old peripherals might prove incompatible.

Yes exactly – either that various hardware are not supported by XP at all.
Or that the drivers CLAIM to work for XP, but when you actually use them, you realise they don’t work, or don’t work as well.

So I want Win98 for some of my older h/w that I don’t want to throw in the bin for no reason.
