Dropbox basically INOP under W10

Another major fail, though not Microsoft’s fault, is the Dropbox app/program (that allows files to be stored on the local computer, I’m not talking browser) is so buggy as to be useless. Very unfortunate as I was counting on that to easily share files from a new Surface we got to our existing machines.

Why Dropbox would release such junk is a disappointment to me and others.

Is there a DropBox forum here? I’ve looked around and can’t seem to find one. The ‘official’ DropBox forum seems to remain off-line for some reason… it has been a while.

I am using Dropbox with Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) (together with Microsoft OneDrive) without any problems (OS upgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro).

Have you installed the latest version (I see in the Release Notes that the last three versions V3.8.4, 3.8.5, 3.8.6 and 3.8.8 have all been compatible with Windows 10).

The latest version (V 3.8.8) was released on 14 August 2015 and is available here:

On Windows 7 Pro I found that Dropbox 3.8.6 used to fail regularly and randomly with the ‘mouse-over’ message “Connecting…“, to the extent that I had to set up a one-line BATch file invoked by a desktop shortcut, to do TaskKill and restart of Dropbox.

This problem disappeared when I installed v3.8.8, so I also would recommend you try this – if you haven’t already!

There appear to be two versions, one for the Windows Desktop and one for metro. The desktop one is version 3.8.8 and works fine for me.

Thank you for the ‘dropboxforum’ site… I was given ‘dropbox.com/forum’ as the address — which is wrong. I do have v. 3.8.8 installed.
I found the answer on the Dropbox site after a little hunting around… under selective syncing. Files are kept on the HD, and build up as you increase the size of Dropbox. If you run out of HD space, you can selectively sync — effectively removing access from one device, freeing up HD space, but maintaining access through other devices. Not helpful really – I have Dropbox to maintain access to files.
So I’m rearranging things to have Dropbox reside on a 64GB mini-SD drive in my Surface Pro, thus freeing up my HD a bit.
My next question would be… which takes up less HD space – OneDrive or Dropbox? And can OneDrive be diverted to save on my mini-SD drive?

My experience with DropBox is a bit old, but I recall that the amount of hard drive space used was more dependent on the data than the method of synching.

One thing I will say is that directing the OneDrive storage to a removable drive is more restrictive in Windows 10 than I recall it being in Windows 7 and Windows 8. What I needed to do was create a Virtual Drive on the removable drive and then direct the synching there. Other options are described on the internet such as mounting the removable drive as a subdirectory on the system drive, but I found that this was a bit more complex and ran significantly slower.

One question I have is why I have 35.8GB in my Surface Pro 3 HD (measured by WizTree) but only 34GB in my DropBox “cloud” (measured by DropBox.com).

Creating a Virtual Drive on my external miniSD card if I want to use OneDrive seems a bit beyond my paygrade… but I may have to give that some patient thought ahead. I’m not yet convinced that OneDrive is any better than DropBox, which has suited my needs quite well to this point (at least Pre-Surface and its smaller HD).
