Drop down menu hyperlinks open in show mode

hm. There are probably better ways to do this, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Try using an action setting. Select Run Program and put this in the box:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11POWERPNT.EXE “c:test.ppt”

That would open PPT in edit mode with the file text.ppt (on your C: drive) opened. Not sure where you intend to house the templates, but if the path is the same on all systems for the networked drive, this should work. Of course, it also assumes that PPT is installed using the same file path/directory on everyone’s systems as well.

Oh, an alternative might be to use Shyam Pillai’s Launch.EXE. http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/Powe…orun_launch.htm%5B/url%5D has instructions for using it.

Whoops, I don’t think I explained myself well enough in the original post. I’m not trying to create a hyperlink within a PPT document, I’ve created a new drop down menu for the Menu bar (File, Edit, View, Insert, Help etc). The process for doing this involves copying a button from an existing menu (Say the FIle Open button) and customizing it by assigning a hyperlink. It’s this hyperlink that I’ve pointed towards a POT file and have opening in Edit mode.

I actually tried your suggestion in the address field but it gives an error.

Any more thoughts?

I’ve not done what you’re trying to do, and I’m not quite sure how it should be done, to tell the truth.

As you explained below, the menu bar command would actually have to be the one for File/Open. But the issue then becomes how to tell the File/Open command what exactly to open, but customizing it with a hyperlink isn’t going to work (well, it obviously doesn’t ), because hyperlinks only work in Show Mode. You hyperlink from one PPT file (in show mode) to another, which also opens in show mode. So the problem lies in the hyperlink — a hyperlink to a PPT file isn’t going to open in edit mode.

If you just use File/Open, it takes you to the user’s default file locations, I suspect. Hm. Wonder if a command line in the hyperlink box would work? Maybe open it with /n or something? http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00528.htm%5B/url%5D lists the command lines for PPT. Those might be worth playing with.

I’ve created a custom menu with a button containing an assigned hyperlink. The link goes to a PPT or POT file that I wish to open, but in edit mode. I seem to be getting it in slideshow mode.

I can’t find an option for this in Powerpoint itself and the closest help document gave guidance on opening hyperlinks to PPT files (in edit mode) from web browsers. This works but it’s a very specific reg key and only works from web browsers. (See KB Article 299824)

I’m trying to do this simply to provide a quick way of accessing templates for my office. I thought I’d have them available from a menu and then push out my customised version of Powerpoint to the rest of the office via Group Policies.

Anyone feel like pointing me in the right direction for all this?
