I have a Toshiba Laptop with 8.1. I got a update notice from Toshiba to update drivers and when I click on it, it crashes my computer. Since it is from Toshiba, I don’t know how to get rid of it. Karpersky and Malwarebytes and Trends Housecall don’t see it. I really don’t want to have to go back to Best Buy again, but at the moment don’t see a solution. Any ideas appreciated.

If there is a Toshiba update program that is started when you boot the PC you can stop it from running. You can use Task Manager to disable startup items. Then you can investigate what the updates are for at the Toshiba web site.

While I don’t know how you get to All Programs in Win 8.1 but in the Toshiba folder you will see Toshiba Service Station or Tempro.

Click on this to open it and then you can select Disable which should stop the Alerts, but the alerts should give more info on the driver updates.

You can also go to Toshiba Support and enter your computer details and then check for any updates that post-date the purchase. http://support.toshiba.com/support/products?cat=Computers

You’ll find the short model number on the base of the laptop.

To get to “All Programs” go to the Start Screen and click on the down arrow at the bottom left.

Just a note: having two or more antivirus programs running at the same time can cause problems, you have Kaspersky and Trend Micro’s Housecall, both are good programs. My wife got Kaspersky with her new Toshiba Notebook.

I noticed that Windows Defender was running too. I wonder if that is creating a problem. I am going to call Toshiba tomorrow and see if we can get some ideas together. I will get back after I get some more ideas. I haven’t been able to determine what the Toshiba updates are as far as dates.

I thought Defender stopped itself if another AV was installed.

No, if the “another AV” is intelligent enough to detect WD, then it will usually turn off WD or at least offer an option to turn off WD.

This varies depending on which AV/ISS is installed. AVG turns WD off by default, not sure about other AV/ISS programs.

Avast probably does not turn off WD by default. I have both running scheduled scans; Avast is monitoring, WD protection is off, scheduled scans only.

I also thought that WD was auto turned off when a 3rd party AV was installed, but AVAST Free will run alongside anything because it doesn’t have its own firewall and it’s the firewall that causes the conflict.

Wonder if the crash is AV related and booting up into Safe Mode with Networking would isolate 3rd party AVs and any other Start up programs and try the Toshiba update in that mode.

Well, for whatever reason, I finally was able to install the Toshiba updates and everything is working pretty well at the moment. I think Karpersky probably turns WD off, it just appeared to be running. Thanks to all for the help.

Glad you were able to get that sorted.

My wife got a new Toshiba Notebook with Win8.1 3 months ago and the deal included Kaspersky Antivirus. I just checked it and Windows Defender is indeed turned off.
