Hi, hopefully someone can help me with this. I have given up trying to post on Dell Community Support Forums as I cannot get it to let me post a question (every time I get to the Support Forums it seems to have lost my login).

I came to my PC this morning and the screen resolution had been reset to 1024 x 768. Yesterday morning it was as it should be (1920 x 1200). The system had not been rebooted and no MS updates had been installed. When I looked into it I noticed that the monitor driver is set to “Generic Non-PnP Monitor”. Windows tells me I have the latest version of this driver. When I check the Events tab in its properties it shows that it was configured and started at 11:55 yesterday. No-one was using the computer at this time and these are the only events for it i.e. nothing before yesterday. I tried setting the resolution to what the monitor can support (1920 x 1200) but that option is not available, the nearest one is 1600 x 1200 which is not appropriate.
I did a reboot and that didn’t fix the problem.
I did a bit of online research and found that Dell have released a Win 10 driver for this monitor so I downloaded from http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverid=FTX9M
I then tried to install the driver the Dell Monitor Driver Installer.exe that was included in the downloaded package. When I do this I get the following message:
The following connected monitors have been detected:
Def Plug and Play Monitor – Default_Monitor
Drivers for the following monitors have been found:
Dell U2412M(Analog) – DELA079
Dell U2412M(Digital) – DELA07A
Dell U2412M(DisplayPort) – DELA07B
Drivers for the following connected monitor can be installed:
None
Please connect your monitor before running this program.
System details: XPS 8700 32 Gb, Windows 10 Home (Ver 1511 + a few minor updates since – not received the anniversary update yet). I have also run 2 virus checks to make sure nothing untoward is on the system (Bitdefender & Malwarebytes) – nothing found.

Can someone advise on how to get my display back to 1920 x 1200, presumably by advising on how to install the correct driver.

Thanks.

My Dell U2412M monitor is working fine on Windows 10 AU driven by an nVidia GeForce GT 220.
The monitor driver details show as:

[*]Driver Provider: Dell Inc
[*]Driver Date: 15/06/2012
[*]Driver Version: 1.0.0.0
[*]Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

My PC was updated from Windows 7 Pro, and I haven’t looked at any monitor drivers over this period!

Have you tried using Device Manager to update the driver manually, browsing to the C:DellDriversFTX9M folder?

When I do that it tells me

The Best Driver Software for your device is already installed
Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date.

It is as though Windows has decided that the generic driver (which does not support the screen resolution provided by my monitor) is the best driver for me and so is stopping me from fixing the problem.

Are your Chipset and graphics drivers updated?

I updated graphics driver (AMD Radeon R9 270) this morning, rebooted and still the same.
I have just checked ACPI x64 based PC driver (in Computer) and Intel Core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40Ghz driver (in Processors) and they are both up to date. Interestingly there are 8 instances of that driver in the Processors section of Device Manager!! They all point to C:Windowssystem32driversintelppm.sys (Ver 10.0.10586.0)

Four cores, eight threads – but I would be intrigued if you could use a different driver for each thread!

Did you download the “updated graphics driver (AMD Radeon R9 270)” from the AMD-ATI support site? Radeon Software Crimson Edition Graphics Driver Installer for Windows 10 64-Bit

…Interestingly there are 8 instances of that driver in the Processors section of Device Manager!!…

That is normal w/ an Intel i7 CPU (4 cores w/ “hyperthreading” = 8 “devices”).

Thanks for the response.
I have just downloaded and installed the Crimson Edition 16.9.1 Hotfix from the AMD Radeon Link you provided. The installation was successful. I rebooted and for some reason BitDefender stopped working (Service became inactive). Not sure if coincidence. Anyway an Installation Repair and a few reboots later BitDefender now working again. However no change on my display – still 1600 x 1200. I tried to update the Monitor Driver with the new Dell Driver referred to earlier in thread and it tells me that Windows thinks the best driver software for my monitor is already installed.

Fixed it!

The monitor was connected through VGA port on monitor. I switched to DVI, rebooted and hey presto all back to normal.

Thanks all for your ideas and suggestions.

The solution to a problem is simple only when you have it!
