I would like to know whether Driver Booster 3.1 developed by IOBIT is worthwhile installing to update outdated drivers?

If not, is there any software you can recommend to update outdated drivers

I tried Driver Booster for someone not so long back and it must have downloaded the wrong driver.

Can’t remember which driver it was or what problem it caused, but I had to use my restore points to put things right.

I have nothing against driver updater programs as long as you just use them to see if there are any updates and then go to the vendors sites for them if and when you have problems.

I use various IoBit programs, such as smart Defrag 4, and I’m happy with it. I have used Driver Booster in the past, but have received more than one incorrect driver / recommendation. Run the program by all means, but only use it as a guide to indicate that there may be better drivers out there. Go to the hardware web sites, and check for drivers for your specific hardware; If you don’t find any, or your hardware hasn’t got a built-in self updater, you don’t need to go any further than to just re-install the drivers that came with the computer in the first place. All this, of course, assuming that you observe the rule ” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it “.

I cannot speak for Iobit’s Driver Booster which I have no experience of using but I DO use – and can heartily recommend – the DriverMax
program which you can download from

I like this program so much that I have just renewed my annual subscription to it! It does exactly what it is supposed to do and is very harmonious on my system. Try it, you could do a LOT worse! :rolleyes:

Like others, I have tried many different driver updaters, with varying degrees of success. For the past couple of years, tho, I have been using SlimDrivers, updating all 6 of my PC’s. Only once did it give me a bum driver, and Windows let me roll that back to the original. It does a thorough scan of your system and shows what it has found. I never bother with things like the modem drivers, since I don’t use a modem. According to MajorGeeks.com,:

It is free, the best kind, but watch to be sure it doesn’t try to download a bunch of bloatware; I think MajorGeeks is OK, but just watch out. It makes a backup BEFORE changing anything, so you can always roll it back.

I NEVER trust those paid-for programs because you don’t know what they do until AFTER you pay for it!

$35 a year! You must be joking! I don’t pay that for my backup program and that actually has value.

I’ve tried Slimdrivers in the past but found that even though it said there was an update and supposedly installed it – the date of the driver prior to updating was exactly the same after even though the date of the update was given as more recent.

The last time I tried it and ran SuperAntiSpyware after, it found something I think was called Korad and removed it.

I ran SAS a second time which came up clean, uninstalled Slimdrivers then reinstalled and SAS found it again.

I use to download it from http://www.driverupdate.net/ as Norton has often blocked a Toolkit infection when using Softonic.

AVG sometimes ‘finds’ things, too, and I just ignore them. As for the drivers, check the version. If that didn’t change, then nothing happened. I do my BIOS updates directly from HP, but the other stuff seems to be safe enough, and like I said I don’t always ‘need’ everything SlimDrivers finds. They also have SlimCleaner, which I don’t feel is any better than CCleaner, personally. As you can see, I really love FREE software, but there are limitations. Only on VERY rare occasions do I ever actually BUY a program. It has to be extremely good and I have to do a thorough review BEFORE I buy it! I have been bitten a number of times in the past!

When Slimdrivers has checked your system and tells you there is a newer driver to what you have and says it has successfully downloaded it, then I expect to see a driver with a newer date on it – otherwise what is the point of wasting the time to download and install what turns out to be the same driver ?

This is the main reason I dumped it and I now only go looking for drivers if one seems to be problematic.
