Is there a way to get rid of the annoying “create drawing here” prompt that comes up everytime I try to draw a text box? Is there a setting somewhere to turn that off?

      Select Tools | Options…
      Activate the General tab.
Clear the check box “Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShape”.
      Click OK.

(This is always one of the first things I do if I have to work with Word on a new PC.)

It’s a really incomprehensible “improvement”. It definitely shouldn’t have been on by default…

I almost agree that it shouldn’t be on by default. However, there are times when I find it handy. If I decide to do some kind of line drawing in Word (a big if), having that canvass helps so that I don’t have to worry about where my lines are going to be relative to the text – they all go on the canvass. When I’m done, I can re-position the canvass to where I want it to be. I didn’t understand the benefit at first but I don’t find it that hard to work with once I got used to it.
