Running windows 8.1. Computer just got hung up and then said it was some kind of error; rebooted; and i saw DPC Watchdog Violation.
What is it? Any suggestions what I can or should do about it?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody_MVPNovember 15, 2014 at 11:58 am #1475658Did you get a BSOD [Blue Screen Of Death] that showed that message? Maybe one of the pages found here will have help:

AskWoody PlusNovember 15, 2014 at 5:19 pm #1475770I am quoting:
“Then I came upon a short note from some kind soul that said something like, “Do this and your problem will stop or dramatically decrease: Go to Control Panel>Power Options>click on Choose What the Power Buttons Do>click on Change Settings that are Currently Unavailable>unclick the box labeled Turn on Fast Startup.” (This turns off Hibernate, too.) Then I restarted. I couldn’t believe it. My problem was gone.”The above material comes from:

If you have not solved the problem
We do need the actual log files (called a DMP files) as they contain the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here
If you have any questions about the procedure please askIf you are using Blue screen view, who crashed, or a similar application, don’t. They are wrong at least as often as they are correct

AskWoody LoungerDecember 5, 2014 at 6:38 am #1478761Turning Fast Start-up off did not solve the problem after all; the problem returned. I took the quitter/coward way out and refreshed. It means re-installing so much but the machine is working wonderfully; maybe, even better than when new and it had some problems. The thing that bothered me was after refreshing I had to re-install Microsoft Office. It was my understanding that Microsoft programs would be untouched. I will say this, the refresh method sure a ot better than the old way of reformatting and re-installing.

From http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
Apps you installed from websites and DVDs will be removed. Apps that came with your PC and apps you installed from the Windows Store will be reinstalled. Windows puts a list of removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC.
So if Office didn’t come with the PC (you installed it from a DVD or a web download), it will be lost when you do a refresh.
