I’m about 10 or so days from a full ‘reset’ of Windows 8. All updates installed. I’ve now noticed all the perflib warning/errors in the Event Viewer. Clicking the ‘Event Log Online Help’ link does no good. Either the ‘page can’t be found’ or ‘no more information’ is what I get. Nice job Microsoft, THIS is your NEWEST operating system.

What performance issues are you experiencing?

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

None that I’ve seen so far. Everything seems to be working just fine.

Have you checked the details of the event to see which service can’t be opened?

I now see that the perflib errors are only a small part of errors listed. I’m getting them for DistributedCOM, VSS, SideBySide, Dhcp-Client, Kernel-Power, and some others, including System Restore.

I thought that I’d error check C. When I right click and pull up “Tools” then “Error Check” it says “You don’t need to scan this drive”. If I choose to scan anyway, it says Windows found errors and to repair the drive.

So, I opened an elevated Command Prompt and ran Chkdsk. I used the command “chkdsk C: /F”. It goes to town then tells me I have to reboot. I do. Then checking the disk through the Tools as above gives the same info. Errors detected and to repair the drive.

I did a full “reset” of Windows on June 24th (after installing a program that trashed not only Windows but MailWasher Pro and a couple other programs).

Clicking “Show Details” doesn’t give me any information on files that need to be repaired.

      Try running chkdsk /r

Well, that was fun! NOT!!! It got up to 27% and stopped. Waited for hours and no change. Had to do a hard stop. Machine come back up and said drive couldn’t be repaired. Offered to do a System Restore.

That wiped out a couple of recently installed programs. Checked back in Event Viewer and it shows still more errors/warnings. At least now when I scan C, it shows no errors now.

Despite the warning/errors, it’s up and running. Don’t really notice any performance issues. Maybe I’ll leave well enough alone.:^_^:

Your hard drive is most likely going bad. I strongly advise that you replace it ASAP.

I have personally had chkdsk /r take more than a day to complete on a drive that was throwing bad sectors. It is not advisable to stop chkdsk.

This is a brand new computer. hp envy h8 1534. Bought off the shelf May 14th of this year. Replacing the drive would be fun, the case is riveted shut.

I agree with bbearren. At a minimum if you don’t want to replace your hard drive, I would make an image backup of the drive, do a full format (not quick format) and restore the image.

The hard drive replacement instructions can be found here:

If its a new system it should be under warranty. Contact HP and relate your chkdsk experience to them.

I concur with Jerry. This should be HP’s problem.

I downloaded the newest version of SeaTools (Seagate drive). It says it works on Win 8. My version of 8 (64 bit) says it’s not compatible. I bought this at Best Buy and purchased a 1yr Geek Squad subscription. Guess I’ll take it in and see what they have to say.
