I want to put a couple of appraisal forms up on my Intranet for people to be able to download the Word doc so that they can fill them out in Word and attach them on an e-mail and return to an addressee. I don’t necessarily want them to see the form but to just be able to copy it. Okay I can make it read only but what is the best way for the download to a local PC please without Word itself being opened? Any advise will be gratefully accepted.

      Hello Mike,

I can think of a few different ways to do this. First and most commonly used is the following.

      1. Open the web you are working with and from where you want these files to be presented and available.
      2. Go to File > import and import these docs directly into the web.
      3. Next, go to the page that you are going to present these and make a hyperlink and then select this page as that hyperlinks address.
      4. What will happen when someone clicks on the hyperlink, it will give your viewer the chance to either open it or to save it.
      5. If they don’t have word on their machine, it won’t be able to open it and they should save it as another extension, such as .txt lightbulb

Another thought that is coming out soon would be — check this out http://www.aitcom.net/sharepoint. Then, check out the sharepoint demo. This lets you upload documents to the Intranet server and those that need to go and download it from that location can. thumbup

      Hope that helps!

        Hi Alba,
Thanks very much for your help. It’s very useful. The only proviso on this is that people must have their MY COMPUTER (C:),VIEW,OPTIONS,FILE TYPES TAB and then setting the MS WORD DOCUMENT ‘confirm open after download’ tag. This then ensures that you get the open or save dialogue window. However if I haven’t got this set WORD opens in the browser but, as before, I have no toolbar to save the document. If you have any idea how, I’m using NT 4.0 with WORD 97 by the way, I can get a WORD toolbar in the browser with it I’d be grateful. Many thanks and have a great weekend. Mike

While the toolbar won’t be there you should always be able to get a file save as menu when word opens in the browser. I believe that users who have loaded the recent security patches for outlook and outlook express that have come down lately will always get prompted to save the file (one of woody’s complaints I think).

You might also want to try saving the file as rtf. It will still load in word, also word pad (if the file is not to complicated) and a number of other word processors if the user doesn’t have Word.

Some users may trust it more as there can be no macro virus in an rtf

Thanks a lot HR. I’m learning a lot here.
            Cheers
            Mike
