Downloading files (XP, I think)

I don’t work with FrontPage or do any sort of web work. I do training for Word/Excel/PPT, etc. So I am way out of my league here, but thought I’d give it a shot.

We have some PPT templates available on our intranet. I want our users to be able to Save Target As and have .pot be the file type, but our web guy says there’s not a way to do that. (Even though the files available are saved as .pot, when you download them, you’re prompted to save as .ppt)

Is he right? Thanks for any input you can offer.

A quick work-around would be to use a ZIP archive.

What web server is it? Apache? For some web servers there is a .htaccess file that affects the way files are “described” to the browser so that the browser can understand what to do with them. For example, an HTML page is accompanied by a header that indicates it is a TEXT type, so the browser renders it onscreen. In the past we’ve helped folks who had problems with PhotoShop (PSD) and maybe other file types for which the download process wasn’t working correctly. If you search for htaccess hopefully you’ll find some useful posts.

If this is on an IIS server, well, Microsoft should be able to answer for this one!

A weird variant I’ve seen on this is when the template is opened in IE, and the user asks to save from within IE it defaults to a .pot
However, a right click on the link only offers to save as a ppt file.

Why – I don’t know if this is a consistent behaviour.

That’s interesting, I just checked how ours works and it prompts to save as .ppt whether you click and choose save or right-click and choose Save Target As. I suppose we’ll just chalk it up as another mysterious Microsoft “feature.”
