My OE6 client now wants to upgrade to Windows Mail, NOT Windows Live Mail. I can’t find a DL link for just Windows Mail. Is it no longer available for DL ??

What is the major difference between the two clients and would the client be served as well by the online email supplied by his ISP as by Windows Live Mail ?? I am assuming that Live Mail is an online client like Hotmail.

It looks like Windows Mail is built into Vista the same way OE came packaged with XP.

Also (grabbed from this site — “Windows Mail is a free email and newsgroup client Microsoft introduced in Windows Vista to succeed Outlook Express. Both Windows Mail and Outlook Express (for Windows XP) is replaced by Windows Live Mail”

As Mike notes, you can’t download Windows Mail.

Windows Live Mail is a stand-alone e-mail client like Outlook, Outlook Express and Mozilla Thunderbird, not a webmail client such as Hotmail or Gmail. The moniker “Live” is because it’s part of Microsoft’s “Live” family of applications.

Thanks gentlemen. Stupid Microsoft naming !!! I couldn’t imagine that they went to strictly web based email, but the naming is ambiguous and confusing at best.

I suppose I’ll be upgrading myself in the next few weeks. I really don’t like theinterface of IE7 & 8 and am very comfortable in my “old sweater” Outlook Express, but one can’t afford to be too far behind the curve with computer technology or you end up off the road and out of touch.

I just returned from installing Windows Mail on the clients computer and other than wasting an hour (computer is very slow) exporting his Address Book, emails and settings, (as instructed in a Microsoft article about installing Windows Mail and migrating to it from OE 6) only to find that when I installed WLM that it does all this itself automagically and then struggling with why I need a Hotmail account to work with the Live Mail account and then finding it isn’t really necessary (although this doesn’t seem to be explained anywhere), I got his email working correctly and he is a happy camper.

For myself, I think I’m going to do a little research and a full image backup before I go there myself.

I’m going to have to try it soon since MS is dropping support for it on Sept. 9 and it will no longer be capable of downloading mail from the hotmail servers.

Forced upgrade due to obsolecence of the existing product.

When I first set up WLM, it was on a Windows 7 Beta machine, as it was needed to read the Newsgroups. I do NOT recall seeing that a “HotMail” account was required, all I saw and did get was a “Live.com” account.

Now that I have also used it for email, I kinda like it. It still is NOT Outlook (not Outlook Express) but it is a usable program.

I can’t recall exactly what the reason was that I was informed that a Hotmail account was required to perform some function with the newly created Live accout (might have been sending mail from that ID in Live Mail, but I’m not sure). I simply found the setup process a bit confusing and the instructions unnecessarily vague and incomplete for a product that is replacing something as widely used as OE has been over the years.

After fooling with the program for a little while and getting it setup and functioning properly I found it to be a useable replacement that will take some getting used to. One thing I couldn’t understand was the lack of a Send/Recieve button and that the client doesn’t offer any assistance. Poking around I discovered that hitting the Sync Accounts (???) button worked like a Send/Recieve button and immediately downloaded any mail waiting on the server. The only accounts are the client’s ISP (comcast) account and the new Live account. Can you shed some light on this ??

I just finished installing Windows Live Mail on my wife’s PC a few days ago and I also saw that instruction to sign up for a Live account or something like that. After reading all the fine print I learned that that account is needed only if you are going to retrieve messages from Hotmail (or something like that). I did not sign up for that Live acount and WLM is working fine for her.
