I have a computer that is running Vista and it having a lot of problems. I would like to downgrade to XP Pro. Does anyone have experience doing this? The biggest question is did you have problems with drivers and how did you overcome that problem?

The hardware and drivers will be your biggest issue.

You should check with the computer manufacturer to determine if the hardware and drivers are compatable with XP.

      Some questions:
      1. Is this machine an OEM type like Dell, HP or similar?
      2. Do you have a valid MS CD of Win XP Pro? Not an OEM recovery CD.
      3. Do you have data existing on the Vista version that you need to save? ( if so, copybackup same before doing anything )
      4. Also, what do you mean by “having a lot of problems”? For example?

With a full XP Pro CD you can just reformat your HD and start from scratch. Drivers should NOT be a problem unless you have some specialized piece of hardware. If so, download and save any special drivers that are for XP.

I think you may have a challenge if this computer has a SATA hard disk, since XP doesn’t include the startup drivers for SATA drives. There are work arounds but these are kinda complicated.

Later computers may have a BIOS which addresses this problem, and if you do have a SATA drive, there might be a BIOS upgrade to solve this.

Regarding other hardware drivers, not sure I agree with Viking that these will not be a problem. It may be possible to locate these from the maker, but for my Acer notebook, I had to search around the various regional support sites to find them. They were not on the local support site; I think I found them on the Europe support site.

We might know more if the OP answers the questions I posed. Until such time, who knows?

As an alternative, have you considered upgrading to Windows 7?
