Double Spaces After Periods

Our staff are arguing over the need to type double spaces after periods. I reckon it’s a throw-back to typing, because I thought Word automatically increased space sizes after a period.
Does the Lounge have an agreed philosophy on this issue?
(I wanted to search & see if it’s been discussed before, but couldn’t work out what to search for!?)

Ah, but old habits die hard. Having learned to type on a manual typewriter (ooh, I’m dating myself!) I just can’t stop putting two spaces after a period.

I know that with proportional spaced fonts, you’re only supposed to use one space after a period, but I just don’t think it makes a clear enough visual break between sentences. So I’m hanging on to my two spaces after a period. I also learned to type on a manual typewriter (don’t even ask how many years ago THAT was), but it’s not old habits refusing to die for me. I just don’t like the way one space looks.
I finally did break the tab, type, return, return habit and am using first line indents and space after like a good Word user, so old dogs can be taught new tricks!

And don’t forget that you can set your grammer checker to check for 2 spaces between sentences. Tools/Options/ Spelling & Grammer tab/Settings between sentences/spaces between sentences.

When you create documentation for products that start with small letters that are not capitalized at the start of a sentence (such as icWORKSHOP, or if your company name starts with one, like mPortal), you notice very quickly how cramped and confusing it looks to start a sentence with one of these words after leaving only one space after the previous sentence. This reason alone was sufficient for me to switch back to the two spaces after period convention.
