• Do I Upgrade to 1909 Now or Wait a Little Longer?

I run Windows 7, but my husband’s computer runs Windows 10 Home.  His company controlled everything with his company laptop, so when he retired and bought his new computer, he was used to letting things happen.  I changed a few settings when we first set it up, but didn’t pay much attention to the updates.  He had no problems other than minor ones like icons moving around.  Then he couldn’t log in after the September 2020 patches.  I got things fixed and paused updates.

With Woody’s advice to go ahead and install the October 2020 patches, I just did so. Things went smoothly and I was able to log in.  I went to pause updates again until the November 2020 patches are deemed safe, and it said there was a “Feature Update” to version 1909.  I hadn’t realized he was running 1903.

There is no offer of version 2004 anywhere, so is it safe to click “Download and Install”? (After the usual precautions, of course–backups, system restore point, etc.)  I would prefer not to update via the ISO if I don’t have to.

With Patch Tuesday looming, should I go ahead and upgrade now?

Yes, you should go ahead and update to v1909, because if you don’t, MS will probably force it anyway. Better to do it knowingly than be surprised..

Once the update is finished, be sure you reset Windows Update to the settings you are used to so you don’t get upgraded further. v1909 is good till May 2021.

      Hi

The following article is relevant to those of us who are still using Windows 10 v1903:

      Hope this helps.

I was on 1809 and upgraded a few days ago to 1903 and wondered if I should immediately upgrade to 1909. (Windows Update does not let me jump versions so I had been unable to go from 1809 to 1909 directly unless I wanted to not use Windows Update to do it).

I did upgrade via Windows Updates right away from 1903 to 1909 and I wasn’t sure anything happened! No difference between the two versions as far as I could see except for Fx 60.9.0 ESR version that I use. Fx didn’t react adversely to 1903 at all but when I opened it after upgrading to 1909 it told me that ALL of my extensions (including ones that had been disabled for ages) needed to update! That made no sense because Basilisk with the same extensions (and version dates) did not tell me I needed to update any extension!

Based on my experience the past half hour, if you have Fx ESR be very careful about upgrading to 1909. Fx no longer insists I need to update all extensions. That’s good. However, it is completely unusable! It starts two instances and NOTHING closes either! I don’t want a newer version of Fx (which might or might not work ok on 1909). Mozilla has, yet again, taken Fx in the wrong direction so I want a version of Windows that works with the version of Fx ESR I like.

Plus, Windows Explorer is all messed up now.

      Hello @WSBirdLady!

If I were in your shoes, I would upgrade when I have (free) time, not when Microsoft obliges me to do so. See, we never know when we need these toys up and running. And simply sometimes we can not wait for an upgrade (however fast it is) to complete.

Taking into account that you can do your backup (and verify it! 😉) before the upgrade to v1909,  I would do the upgrade right after that.

Me, I am on v1909 right now. I reinstalled everything from scratch (v1709) and upgraded directly to v1909. And I plan to move to v20H2 (*) only on May next year  when v1909 is about to become obsolete.

*: considering v20H2 will be quite stable till there. Otherwise, v20H1.

      Godspeed!

      Sandro

After setting a restore point, making a full backup, creating an emergency disk with EaseUS Todo Backup (which needed to be done in any case), and tweaking a few settings, I went ahead and clicked “Download and Install” to upgrade.  Everything went very quickly and smoothly and it says the computer is up to date–I verified that it is now running Version 1909.  I immediately paused updates for the full 35 days until we get the “All Clear” on the November patches.  I still see no notice about Version 2004, so will cross that bridge when I come to it…

Thanks to PKCano for the very quick response, and other posters as well for sharing their advice and experience.  I just wish Microsoft wouldn’t make things needlessly complicated and glitchy, so we have to be afraid of updates!

If you set the TRV you can control what version MS pushes to your PC.

my brother’s HP Spectre x360 15-df laptop still has v1903 as that was the Win10 version that came pre-installed with the HP laptop – I may upgrade it to 1909 by the end of year 2020 (either by WU or by ISO method)
