I’ve got a silly question here. Its not really a problem, but I like my PC’s to be set up the way I like it, and anything that changes it annoys me.

I have 3 physical IDE disks on my PC.

I’ve just formatted the C drive on of the IDE drives, on one of my PC’s and re-installed everything, as it was time for a clean-up. To do this I disconnected two IDE drives leaving me with an IDE HDD & a CD drive as the slave. The Bios found them as Primary Master and Primary slave as expected. Windows Disk Management COnsole showed my C Drive as Disk 0 again as expected.

When all was working fine, I added the other HDD’s as Secondary Master & slave. Again the Bios showed them correctly.

However Windows Disk Management had changed my original Disk 0 to Disk 2 (see the picture below).

Any ideas why this happens or what I can do to prevent it. As I said its no big deal and it doesn’t cause real issues but for eg when testing disks I like my C drive to be disk 0 to reduce the chance of an error in formatting the wrong disk.

This one talks about SATA rather than IDE, so I’m still browsing: The disk drive numbers may not correspond as expected …

But, I wouldn’t be surprised if the problem is the same for IDE, i.e. MS claims it’s the random assignment of PNP devices during boot. Hmmm, then they say it only applies to Vista, so it seems to have gotten “introduced” with the Vista OS. I don’t know.

I guess it may well be the same problem. In my own very limited way of searching the KB articles it very often seems that solutions you are referred to allegedly apply to products other than your own, but they still appear to work.

Having experienced probs in the past, I made a conscious decision to make partition sizes different, to make identifying disks easier. Its easy though to click the wrong button if you’re not giving 100% attention to a task, so while it is not a big prop, it is an irritation.

The strange thing here tho is that I started to rebuild the PC with just 1 physical disk, so my C drive WAS drive 0. I can understand random allocation of disk nos, but it does seem strange when 1 (or more) is already allocated.

Don’t waste too much time searching tho. You’ve already confirmed I probably haven’t done anything wrong when re-building.
