A few days ago I was working with Word and using the “Courier” font. Today I can’t find it in my font list. All I see is the “Courier New” font. I’ve checked the font list through Control Panel and the “Courier” font is still listed. Has anyone else experienced this and do you know how to get the Courier font back. Also does anyone know what the difference is between the Courier and the Courier New fonts? Thanks in advance.

This may be printer-dependent. If you deleted a printer that contains its own fonts or changed a PostScript driver to a different driver (e.g., HP PCL), then possibly Word would not show those fonts thinking that they are no longer available. As for the printed appearance of Courier and Courier New, I think the latter is a very accurate copy.

Courier new is a True Type font. Courier is a printer font. In my experience, on some printers they come out looking the same, but on others, Courier New is rather lighter in weight.
I agree that this is probably to do with the choice of printer. I checked and found that I coudn’t see Courier on my font list either. Then I selected a different printer (File -> Print then select a different printer, then Close, so as not actually to print, only to change the printer) and then I found Courier was back on the list! I didn’t see it when my Epson was selected, and I did when my HP was.

Thanks! That’s what happened. I changed my default printer from an HP printer to “FinePrint” which is a software utility that allows printing multiple pages of a document on a single sheet of paper. I checked and when “FinePrint” is selected the Courier font disappears. It then reappears if I select the HP printer again.

        Thanks again for the help!

Word 2000 seems to let me print multiple pages on one sheet anyway – in the Print dialog box you can select pages per sheet in the zooming section at bottom right.

Thanks. I’ve heard about that feature. However, I also use FinePrint to print from other programs (Outlook, Excel, browser, etc.).

The difference between Courier and Courier New is like the difference between a Chanel handbag and one from the Jaclyn Smith Collection at K-Mart. Same for Times and Times New, etc.

One is the designer font, the other is a knockoff.
