The “Feature Update Deferral” option box has disappeared on my v1909 as described in the scenario that Woody wrote on the 11/7/2019 in Computerworld. KB 4522355 fix seems to apply only to v1903.

I have been trying to set up a new w10 pro desktop that has 1909 installed. Not knowing anything about the convoluted update process in w10, I used pkcano’s excellent guide. I left the Quality update deferral at 0 but changed the Feature update deferral to 365 (I think) from 0.

A day later,  poof – the Feature Update Deferral option disappeared; the Quality update deferral remains as I did not change it from 0.

Searching on the problem I ran across the Computerworld article which addresses v1903, not 1909.

There is a similar setting in the Group Policy Setting under Win Update for Business (which also has a Semi Channel option that I thought was gone). Advice seems to be not to use Group Policy settings for deferrals. Anyway, if I set it to less than 365, it may not override the 365 setting.

Any suggestions other than reinstalling Windows – a rather drastic step for a minor problem?

As before, if you have any deferral AT ALL set in Group Policy under Windows Update or Windows Update for Business, the pulldowns in the GUI will be grayed out. That appliesin BOTH 1903 and 1909

Please, go look in Group Policy and set those to “Not configured.” The only setting in Group Policy that works to help control the download/install is the “2” (notify download/install) setting to be able to use the GUI pulldowns.

I have no deferrals set in Group Policy. I set the Feature Update via the gui option on the Advanced Settings of the Windows Update Page. I did not even know that there were deferral settings in Group Policy until you mentioned it, so when I followed the instructions the other day, I left the Quality deferral at 0 and set the Feature deferral to 365 (my mistake- should have left it at 0).

I am sorry, but I do not know how to “unconfigure” a setting that is set to “Not Configured”. I went into GP (general and for business). ALL settings are set to “Not Configured”.

Think there is a setting in the registry that I can make to lower the deferral from 365.

Here is the way the Group Policy should look under Windows Update:
          Note the “2” setting.

Here are the three settings in Group Policy under Windows Update for Business.
Note there are no values set under the “Options”.
If any of these are set, the pulldown in the GUI will be grayed out.

      Setting 1:

      2

      Setting 2:

      3

      Setting 3:

      4

My settings are as you describe. NO settings under Windows Update for Business; the list of the 3 settings show “Not Configured”.

Under Windows Update (general), the only configuration is “Configure Automatic Updates” set to 2. There are NO other configured settings; all others show “Not Configured”.

Give me a while. I will give you the location of the Registry settings for both the GP settings and the the GUI settings. Check back in a while, as I’m taking care of the site as well right now.

Thanks, no hurry. From what I gather, registry edits seemed to work for some (not all) 1903 users who had this problem before KB 4522355 was released.

Maybe the whole issue will be resolved once I get a quality update or so. But, at least, with the registry edit, I can reduce <365 if needed.

might be the problem with the original 1909 install media that had build 18363.418

reinstall using the 1909 Jan 2020 “refresh” ISOs or ESDs which have build 18363.592 (KB4528760 integrated).
the Win10 media creation tool should be downloading the 18363.592 version instead of the older 18363.418 build

I did not experience the disappearing feature update deferral option with 1909 Pro…at least not yet with v1909 build 18363.592 or higher

It is —-.418. Maybe it will update to —.592 when I get the first updates tomorrow.

I did make a media creation tool usb. Will have to find out how to use (would this be a refresh, restart, etc) it if WU does not install the newer build. W10 is new to me.

        Thanks.

Ha…. I thought you were up to date!
What you saw has been fixed since then.
You should be fine once you update.

Really regret that I wasted your time with this trivial but confusing issue. I did not look at build # until EP’s post. Maybe that is why no one else is having the problem.

Anyway WU is supposed to run tomorrow; will not pause updating any longer. Maybe newer build will install then; if the updates crash the system, I made a backup. If newer build is not installed, will use the media tool.

Wasn’t a waste of time. You now know where the settings are 🙂
              That counts for something!

Lo and behold, the Feature Deferral dropdown is again shown after the first Win update on this pc today. Now at build —.657. Fortunately no update suspects were installed. I will not Pause updates, but use the gp settings at 2 for updates.

With Win10 I suppose I should not be too obsessed with minor issues as long as it generally performs as it should. There will always be an update that may fix what is broken and might break something that is working.

Many thanks for taking time to compose your guide’ really do not know what I would have done without it. There are suggestions, but they are scattered here and there. It arrived at a most opportune time for me as I was just trying to get this pc set up – it sat in a box for 2 weeks before I wanted to deal with Win10. The first probematic issue seems to be updating and how to control it. And thanks again for helping with my issues.

I got the pictures up on AKB2000016 of the Group Policy and Registry settings today. Did you see them?

            • #2177882

I had not seen it. Thanks for mentioning it and I printed it. Registry settings are quite helpful if needed; will leave them alone. The GP settings that I have are the ones you suggest.

Just run the tool, download ISO file ( it will be the latest 1909) to your desktop. Mount the ISO by clicking on the file and run setup.exe.. select to update keeping your files and data.

FYI, hms, the KB4522355 update was officially released for v1903 but was also in the release preview ring for v1909 users near the end of October 2019 (build 18363.449) and 1909 was not yet released to the public yet back then until November 12 with the next CU which was KB4524570 (build 18363.476).

after you are done installing Win10, type winver.exe in the Run dialog box to show the Windows 10 version & edition. it will mention the build number as well

When running [Media Creation Tool] how ‘up to date’ is the download?
Very recent like a month or less, a month+ back, several months back? More?

This seem it could make a difference in what kind, and quality, of updates are in it.

      • #2233595

The MCT usually gives you the current Build.

If you download the ISO from MS it is not necessarily current.

    • #2238876

the 1909/19H2 ISO image download is build 18363.418 (which may still have the disappearing feature update deferral problem)

the one MCT downloads & creates is build 18363.592 (Jan 2020 refresh, which has the bugfix for the missing update deferral option) thru an ESD download and the MCT converts the ESD file onto an ISO

before MS releases the upcoming 2004/20H1 version, MS could release 1909 “V2” ISO or 1909 April 2020 refresh ISO if they so choose. I know for sure that only MSDN subscribers have recently gotten the newer 1909 refresh ISOs with the March 2020 KB4551762 CU integrated/slipstreamed.
