Microsoft 365 Copilot is here for me but I don’t want it. How do I stop it or get rid of it? One solution will be to go to a system backup and restore. Another possible solution uninstall Office 2013 Pro Plus.

Microsoft 365 Copilot wants to start up and ask for a login. You can see it running in the Task Manager.

    Windows 10 64bit Pro 22H2
Office 2013 Pro Plus (no more updates; should be uninstalled)
It only starts for one of the standard user accounts.

I tried blocking it with Firewall App Blocker; no success.
    I have run AKB9000002 (Win10Pro), 9000004 (Edge) and 9000005 (Edge)
AKB 9000003, I did not believe it is activated because just looking at it now, I have Office Pro Plus.

Shut down the Copilot window and it is no longer running in the Task Manager.

Best answer I see so far: https://community.spiceworks.com/t/microsoft-365-copilot-on-windows-10/1174616

    Task Manager

    Microsoft 365 CoPilot
    C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftOfficeHub_18.2502.1073.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
    WebViewHost.exe

    Microsoft Edge WebView2
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeWebView\Application\110.0.1587.56, msedgewebview2.exe

    Runtime Broker
    C:\Windows\System32, RuntimeBroker.exe

    Admin User
It doesn’t start for an Admin Account, also another standard user account gets WebViewHost error window. Only one standard user gets the above Microsoft 365 Copilot startup.

This is not a major problem, so if someone knows the answer please post.

      Hi KP:

That Microsoft 365 Copilot PWA (progressive web app) simply provides a local interface on your computer that allows you to access the free Microsoft 365 web apps without opening your browser and browsing to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/free-office-online-for-the-web. See my 08-Feb-2025 post # 2746607 in Tex265’s Copilot and Microsoft 356 Copilot have just arrived – what to do? for more information.

Log in with the standard user account that has this app and uninstall from Settings | Apps | Apps & Features.  This should not affect your Office 2013 Pro Plus installation.

      Win-10-Pro-v22H2-Settings-Apps-and-Features-Microsoft-365-Copilot-PWA-Uninstall-NEW-25-Feb-2025

If that doesn’t work log in with your Administrator account and enter the following command in an elevated Windows PowerShell console with Administrator rights:

      Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers -PackageTypeFilter Bundle -name "*Microsoft.MicrosoftOfficeHub*" | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers

That is it, it is a Microsoft Store App. I can see it and uninstall it. Great.

What was the cause? I suspect Windows Security / Defender download and installed it. The reasoning: I use the standard user account to manually download and update Defender anti-malware definitions, and download Monthly Cumulative Updates. The standard user updates Defender. The standard user downloads the cumulative updates. The admin account is used to run the cumulative updates. The Microsoft 365 Copilot app runs on the account which updates Defender. A second standard user does not run the Microsoft 365 Copilot app because I do not use it to update Defender. The admin account does not run the Microsoft 365 Copilot app and is only used to update / install software, typically offline.

One comment: you are very good, @lmacri, by including the PowerShell command to list the Microsoft Store app (Get-AppxPackage) then remove it (Remove-AppxPackage). I have only used those PowerShell commands once myself.

        Resolved, thanks

          Hi KP:

Glad to hear you found a solution. Be sure to post back if you find any further traces of this Microsoft 365 Copilot PWA (progressive web app) on your system.

          What was the cause?

If it only appeared recently on your system then I suspect it was pushed out with a monthly cumulative Win 10 v22H2 update or MS Edge update.

See my 08-Feb-2025 post # 2746607 in Tex265′s Copilot and Microsoft 356 Copilot have just arrived – what to do?.  I’ve had this small PWA in my Win 10 Start menu for a few years (under a different app name), and according to the 19-Oct-2020 PCWorld article Unexpected Office web apps in Windows 10’s Start menu said to be a bug it was first delivered with the Win 10 v20H2 Feature Update around the same time Microsoft released the Chromium-based version of MS Edge. It wasn’t called Microsoft 365 Copilot back then – if I recall correctly it was originally called Microsoft Office, then Microsoft 365, and re-branded (renamed) yet again about a month ago as Microsoft 365 Copilot.

I’ve only launched this PWA once just to confirm it gives me access the free Microsoft 365 web apps at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/free-office-online-for-the-web without opening my browser, but I’ve left it on my system because I might give it a test run when my “perpetual” Microsoft Office 2019 suite reaches end of support on 14-Oct-2025.

            I don’t remember the timeline.

Looking at what I have, the admin account is used to install the monthly cumulative updates as well as run the Edge browser updates. The admin account has a problem opening the Microsoft 365 app.

This may be different for other people’s PC’s, depending on what Microsoft is doing. Potentially an Office update or an Edge update.

A second PC (Windows 10 Pro, slightly different Office configuration) has a similar situation, leading me to believe Defender is the culprit. On PC2 my standard user updates Defender and has the Microsoft 365 Copilot app installed. It is does not have the run problem though. Checking the admin account, Microsoft 365Copilot app is not installed. A second standard account also does not have the Microsoft 365 Copilot app installed either. Only the standard account (doing Defender updates) has the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. I didn’t even know Microsoft 365 app was installed until I started looking for it before it does not pop up, on startup.

If it’s a store app it probably came via the store and not a windows update.

I have been checking out the Microsoft Store update possibility. Here is what I am seeing.

Microsoft Store updates are not disabled by WUMgr

Used Admin account to go into Microsoft Store -> Downloads -> Get Updates (it started to get downloads and install App Store updates; note: ran a PowerShell command, years ago, to uninstall vendor-installed Apps)

Used problem standard user account to go into Microsoft Store -> Downloads -> Get Updates (other Microsoft Store Apps downloaded and installed; apps updates from the Admin account were already updated; other non-Admin Apps downloaded and installed/updated)

Current status: Microsoft 365 Copilot app has not re-installed so I am happy.

Thanks everybody for your input, ideas and solution.
