My end user has an Access database that populates fields in her protected Word document through a Mail Merge. Unfortunately, as soon as she protects the document, her record buttons on the Mail Merge toolbar are grayed-out. She can no longer advance to the next record, previous record, last record, etc. Any advice? Thank you.

Mail merge does not work well with protected documents – if the merge document (the one with the merge fields) contains text form fields, they will disappear from the merged document. See WD2002: Text Form Fields Are Not Retained During Mail Merge. So it’s best to avoid protecting a document, or to unprotect it before merging.
