Under Formatting/Font/Character Spacing, select Expanded spacing to adjust the space between letters. This will solve #1

(Edited by fburg on 23-Jan-09 17:20. ADDED ITEM 5)
Hi All,
I’ve been asked to put together a Diploma for a graduation. Not too hard. But a few questions based on the current version (which I have some leeway with).
1. The words on the original seem to have more space between them than what I am getting by just straight typing. My lines do NOT go all the way across the horizontal space I’ve allocated. The original seems to have the letters condensed (yes, I know where to deal with that in Word) but more space between words. Any way to deal with that?
2. The spaces between words have a dot between them in the original. This is, NOT the dot that Word shows for a space when showing all formatting marks. Any way to show dots without having to do a manual insert of something between each word?
I may have solved #2 – there’s a character called a “middle dot”. It comes in near the baseline but, when made bigger than the surrounding type, it rises up a bit.
Any other ideas? Use of the middle dot, with a regular space around each side of the middle dot, seems to create TOO much space between words.
3. I’m looking for a font that has a shadow – almost like a dot pattern that is gray and moved off the letter itself. The fonts that I have have a minimal shadown at best.
4. Since the original is 10×8, I’d like to show crop marks on my 11×8.5 so I know where to cut. I know you can view text boundaries but they don’t print. I also tried drawing a rectangle of the correct size around my page but that seemed to interfere with the top line of text (which was created with WordArt) even when setting the format options for my rectangle to be behind text (I know the WordArt and rectangle are not on the text layer). That top WordArt line seems to move down about an inch on the page for no apparent reason and I can’t raise it up any higher.
I may have solved #4 by putting the rectangle in the header. But I really have to shrink the header and footer so that my main text area can occupy the full 10×8 area.
5. I would also like the first letter of the name of the graduate to be a drop cap. Seems like the normal Word formating to create a drop cap (I’ve never done this before) splits the first letter off from the rest of the word. So I played around by making the rest of the name a smaller font size and using the Advance field to raise the rest of these letters up (with an Advance field at the end of the line to re-establish the original baseline).
Seems a little hoaky and doesn’t look great (it may be acceptable). Other ideas?
I tried to use Publisher and expected it to have a Diploma that I could just make some minimal changes to. But I didn’t see anything that even looked like a Diploma.
TIA

Microsoft offers some diploma templates in Microsoft Office Online, but they’re all for high school and younger.
(Warning: a Google search for diploma templates leads into dubious territory…)
Thanks Hans.
My diploma is for HS. SO I downloaded 2 of the MS ones and will play around. I think what I created is pretty close to the original (which may not be that important – I’ve been given some unknown amount of flexibility). The questions I posed in the original posting would get me closer to the original if that’s important. If not, I could play with the MS samples.
