I’m considering buying a CoolPix 5700 for my birthday. I’ve had a Nikon digital camera for nearly 6 years now (the early CoolPix 900), the only problem I had with it is the auto-focus motor. OTOH, I’ve got several friends who bought other brand digcams and all of them find it impossible to see/read the LCD screen. (More than just one majpr brand too sad)

Is there anybody out there who’s got a CP5700 who can comment on it ?

      Claude,

We have the CoolPix 4500 and it is a fantastic camera. I would suspect that the 5700 is an even better camera.

If you don’t arleady know about http://www.steves-digicams.com[/url%5D, you may want to have a look at his review of the 5700.

This is his bottom line on the 5700:

“Image quality is always the bottom line and the Coolpix 5700 delivers that in spades. This is a “prosumer” digital camera and it’s a bit pricey at $1199.95 (as of July, 2002.) The camera can be operated like an automatic point and shoot or you can get as creative as needed with its array of drive, exposure, focus and capture features. This is a camera that you can grow into and offers enough options to satisfy everyone from the newbie to the semi-pro. The five megapixel images make perfect, photo-quality prints all the way up to 13×19″ size that are virtually indistinguishable from film-generated photos. If the Nikon D100 SLR is out of your budget then the Coolpix 5700 may be just the advanced digicam that you’re looking for. ”

So it looks like it’s a good one.

Oh no, my other nightly online discussion board obsession… flee

I have played with the 5700 at a couple of stores, but was disappointed with the focus and zooming speed, and the ergonomics. I am leaning more toward the Minolta DiMAGE 7Hi, but no one has them in stock right now. You can find a brief thread comparing the two, with links to much longer threads, on DPreview.com’s Minolta Forum, here. There also is a detailed review. I’m attaching my spec sheet, FWIW.

There is a major industry show the first week of March in Las Vegas which is expected to lead to discounts on current models. Depending on when you were born, this might or might not be relevant. smile
