Personally, I don’t understand why people even bother to plug cameras directly into the computer when products such as this are so inexpensive and easy to use. Don’t know anything about that camera, but you might suggest this to him. I’ve never had a single problem with mine.

I do plug my camera into my computer(s), but I also do NOT use any of the software that comes with the camera. I just use Windows Explorer, and the camera is seen as a removable drive. On some systems it will be display as a camera, but just treat it as a drive. Do your copying in the same manner as you would any other external device.
I think this has worked since Windows Me.

My camera needs to be told to connect to the PC via the USB cable supplied, but other than that it operates exactly as you describe.

Hi Bob, How are you doing? Ruby and I are going to go out to AZ to see my son in OCT. My big problem is my camera won’t upload to the computer , it has been working fine till about 2 weeks ago now it won’t do anything except ding when I switch it on . It is a plug and play Fuji A 303 I don’t know what happened I did not make any changes as far as I know . all of my programs are as they should be . I just downloaded Microsoft service pkg. 2 but this was doing it before , I just thought that service pkg. 2 might straighten something out . If you have any Ideas I would appreciate hearing from you I have sent to a few places to try to get answers.

You appear to have recently highlighted: it has been working fine till about 2 weeks ago now it won’t do anything except ding when I switch it on

Assuming the “dinging thing” is the camera, should he not be exploring whether it is the camera which is at fault? Or is there a problem with the tiny USB plug which plugs into the camera? Has he tried a different memory card in the camera, so see if he gets the same dinging result? (Come to that, what does the manual say is the reason for the dinging noise?).

I don’t follow why he is assuming that there’s something wrong with the computer software…

          John,
Yes, I did highlight that area just to bring out the problem itself from the rest of his message.

I don’t have any other particulars at all. The email I enclosed is exactly what he sent me. I will have to get to him and see if he can be more specific.

If you search around the Windows XP board or this board re: plug and play settings for JPG file types, that might help.

Sounds like the PC is no longer automatically firing-up the FinePix Viewer software when your friend connects the camera and switches it on.

He should be able to start the software manually via the start menu to allow him to download the pictures. I’d recommend that he connects the camera before starting the software, otherwise it won’t recognise the camera as a drive.

Well, It seems he “fixed” the problem by reinstalling XP AND his camera software.
That’s called Brute Force repair. Anyway, he seems to be OK right now.
Thanks for your input tho. I’ll send it along to him.
