Could someone help me make sense of all of the different names, versions, SP numbers, etc of Windows. I am thoroughly confused. I am using Windows 95 now. In my upcoming purchase of a new PC, all I want is something that doesn’t crash.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

For Windows 2000 go here.If I was to buy a new machine I would got to Windows XP Pro, and NOT even think about Windows XP personal.
As a second choice I would select Windows 2000 Pro.
These two are very stable OS’s and will provide the best that Windows has to offer.DaveA I am so far behind, I think I am First

AskWoody_MVPAugust 20, 2001 at 3:16 pm #538135Look at what Pro offers compared to Per. You may NOT think about using some of these items now, but if you change your mind you will not have to upgrade a second time.
The remote access will be of help to you and who ever may help you maintain your computer. You also may be able to help others by you accessing their computer from yours.
Better security, one of the problems that Steve Gibson is giving Microsoft hell about, is in the Personal version because every account has “Admin” permissions and this problem is an open door. See Windows XP Home Edition Must be made more secure.
Think about what you MAY want to do, NOT what you are currently doing.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 20, 2001 at 4:56 pm #538160Hi
I would tend to disagree with Dave , only in that I’d put Windows 2000 Professional at the top of my list. It’s a tried and true system, and incompatibilities are decreasing daily. XP isn’t even on sale yet, and no doubt the first six months will see a plethora of service releases. There’s also the small matter of changing your hardware and needing to contact MS.
I would imagine that every reply to your question would generate another preference combination : Windows 98SE in a dual boot system with 2kP offers a good deal atm.yer pays yer money….

AskWoody_MVPAugust 20, 2001 at 9:02 pm #538220I agree with MerC as for as the ‘dual booting’ goes. I dual boot both machines, one with Windows 98Fe and 2K and another with Windows Me and XP. I have been testing XP since before RC1 and it is as stable as my 2K version if not more. I do NOT know if MerC as even seen XP, he has nevers stated one way or another. I have asked but have never gotten a answer.
A lot of the PRESS that XP is getting is from those who do not have legal copies of it and it is not working for them the way THEY think it should.DaveA I am so far behind, I think I am First

Apart from today, (which I’ve answered at length in another post) I’ve never seen the question being asked, by Dave or anyone else. Perhaps you could point me towards the post in question?
I’m many things, but psychic isn’t one of them.
I also doubt very much that a tech journalist writing for a specialist mag would need to resort to pirating software to make his or her copy. That’s where I go for part of my information. I can’t see that anyone having tested RC1 and RC2 could be said to have first-hand knowledge and neither would they have a sound basis for a decision on future OSs : the final consumer version might be somewhat of a surprise. But, ypymaytyc.

AskWoody_MVPAugust 21, 2001 at 2:57 pm #538368I too, will be moving to XP Pro as my prime OS. On my desk top I will be updating the hard drives (adding another one) and will be installing XP Pro on partition of these drives. We will be upgrade the wife’s machine(s) as well, later.
I have 3 clients that have been running RC1 in a dual boot mode and are using it daily, and will most likely be upgrading to it in Oct or Nov.
