• Different logins (XP Pro)

I have a portable with XPPro installed. Apart form administrator I have two different logins. “PartonD” is used when the machine is logged into the work NT server but I also have to have “DavidP” for when it is disconnected.

Windows therefore has two different My Documents folders, all with my documents in them as noone else uses the machine. Finding files is a nightmare with the same folder structure duplicated.

This is doing my head in. Is there anyway I can have only one login for myself, whether on the server or not? I thought XP Pro was developed for the serious road warrior – it seems to fail a simple test that Win98 took in its stride.

Using TweakUI PowerToy for Windows XP, you can point “My Documents” folder (under My Computer | Special Folders in TweakUI) to the same folder for each user, say, to C:My Documents (create this folder first). It will warn you, just ignore the warning.

One more thing: the change will work from this point forward, so copy all your existing documents to new folder manually.

Right-click My Documents | Properties and you get the option to change the target folder. You can create a new folder from here and when you apply the change, you will be asked whether you want to move your existing documents to the new location. Unless, of course, your network administrator has disabled this function…
