Hi all, thought I’d ask the question: I have a user who has continuous page numbering throughout her document from 1 through whatever. On the Appendix pages she wants to have a footer that starts at A-1. I’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of – using field codes, sequential #, switches, etc. to no avail. Other than manual numbering, any ideas? TIA,

AskWoody LoungerDecember 29, 2005 at 6:43 pm #992171The usual recipe is:
- Insert a Next Page-type section break before the Appendix, in place of the hard page break;
- Open the footer in the new section and use the toolbar to “break the connection ” with the main part of the document by unclicking the “Same as Previous” button;
- Use the page number format button on the toolbar to restart at 1;
- Edit the page number in the footer to A-{PAGE} (where {PAGE} is a page number field, usually inserted with the page number button)
If that doesn’t work with the overall design of the document, let us know.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 29, 2005 at 6:58 pm #992176Thanks, jscher. I should have been clearer. It’s like this: the document is about 80 pages. The header needs to be number 1 through 80 consecutively. However at page 65 – that’s page 1 of Schedule A – the user wants the header to read “65” but the footer to read A-1. TIA for any suggestion – including one for the lawyer who told
me “That’s ridiculous. WordPerfect could do it and smarta*s Gates’ product should be able to do it too!”

macropod is our expert on “field math” and we have at least one Star Post on that subject (the indexes for star posts are listed near the top of the page). Here’s a general approach that might need some tweaking:
The special recipe is:
- Insert a Next Page-type section break before the Appendix, in place of the hard page break;
- Open the footer in the new section and use the toolbar to “break the connection ” with the main part of the document by unclicking the “Same as Previous” button;
- Press Tab to center, then type
A-
, then- Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field braces and type
=
- Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field braces and type
PAGE
- Press right arrow to move outside the PAGE field, but still inside the = field, and type
-64
(assuming this is the 65th page)
- Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field braces and type
- Select the footer and press F9 to view the result. If it isn’t A-1, then the equation probably needs adjustment. Use Shift+F9 to toggle display of the selected fields.[/list]Better?

AskWoody LoungerDecember 29, 2005 at 8:46 pm #992185… which is fine until the number of pages in the main part of the document changes. If you are deducting a fixed number like 64 you could end in trouble. Can you put a bookmark in the last para on the last page of the main text, then instead of using the number 64 (or whatever) use a PAGEREF field to return the number of that page. You’ll then be OK if the pagination changes.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 30, 2005 at 3:10 pm #992254I’ve thought about it a little more since I had suggested it without actually trying it. It works, I am pleased to say, and I attach a sample. There is a bookmark called Appendix_start at the start of the appendix (rather than the end of the previous section). The field code in the footer of the appendix is
{= {PAGE} + 1 – {PAGEREF Appendix_start *MERGEFORMAT } }
as you can see if you select View Field Codes in Options.
Hope that helps.

AskWoody_MVPJanuary 6, 2006 at 5:37 am #993188Hi Patricia,
Assuming you want the TOC to show 1:65 as the page numbers for the body of the document and A-1:A-n for the appendix, a fairly robust way to continue the body’s page numbering into the appendix is to use a bookmarked SECTIONPAGES field in body and to use that in an equation field in the later section(s). For example, assuming the body of the document and the appendix are in different sections, with page numbering in the appendix section restarting after the body section:
. In the section containing the body of the document, insert a field into the footer as {SET BodyPages {SECTIONPAGES}};
. Update the result via F9 and you’ll now have an invisible SECTIONPAGES field with a ‘BodyPages’ bookmark – all you might see there is the bookmark bar;
. In the appendix, insert a formula field into the footer as {={PAGE}+BodyPages}; and
. Update the result via F9.Getting the 1:n appendix page numbers showing in the TOC is easy. Getting the A-1:A-n appendix page numbers showing in the TOC requires more work, and is usually circumvented by expressing the appendix page numbers as roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv, etc) or as a straight alpha sequence (A, B, C, etc).
One way of Getting the A-1:A-n appendix page numbers showing in the TOC is to:
. Reserve a heading style (say, heading level 9) and format it as numbered, with the Alpa numbering style (A, B, C, etc)
. Format an unused paragraph in the appendix in this reserved style, and make it hidden (eg select it and use Format|Text|Hidden)
. Format the page numbering in the appendix to include the chapter number, with the chapterCheers,
