GuestOctober 17, 2017 at 8:22 pm #138566Well, so far I’ve downloaded the Fall Creators Update ISO and put it onto a USB stick (with Rufus).
Now, I’m just trying to summon up the courage to install it on a spare solid state drive and try it out. Not sure if I’ll be using it much longer than I did with the first Creators Update 6 months ago (lasted about 2 hours then I went back to Windows 7 but we’ll see).
Speaking of ShutUp10, I see there’s a new version that’s just been released to handle the Fall Creators Update, that was quick.
I’ve already seen one forum post where someone is claiming that they’ve done a clean install of FCU, then they removed the “junk apps” (Candy Crush, March of Empires, Facebook, Minecraft, etc.) then after a couple of reboots they’re all back again even when “Update apps automatically” is disabled in the Store.
Hmm… doesn’t sound too promising to me. Might be something the new version of ShutUp10 deals with hopefully.

AskWoody_MVPOctober 17, 2017 at 8:26 pm #138575It’s funny you ask.ย In the test lab I’ve been working today we have 14 machines – all running 1703 Pro.ย Five are on the CBB (I don’t care that this is not what MS calls it now) and the other nine on normal default settings.ย None of the five on CBB settings have picked up anything new today (expected – although Noel’s warning in the other thread is well taken.)ย Out of the others, five are exactly the same hardware, built around the same time, same BIOS versions – but only three got updated today.ย The others in the matching hardware set have not – they show WU as current.ย Of the remaining four machines on various older hardware, about two have also updated, and the last two also show current.
No real pattern in other words . . . it’s like winning the RNG in a game where your odds are 50%.
If it matters, a random note that all of these machines are on AD, not on WSUS, on the same network – and they are all set to “share” updates on the local network (but not the general internet.)

AskWoody_MVPOctober 17, 2017 at 8:26 pm #138576The list of deprecated features is worth a look for those who would be interested in trying this version…
That they’re removing System Image Backup speaks volumes to me about the wrongness of the direction Microsoft is heading in.
We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.

Seriously? It’s in an official “Features that have been removed” list but hasn’t actually been removed?

AskWoody_MVPOctober 17, 2017 at 10:08 pm #138592I just checked – the old UI to create a system image is still present in 1709, as is the CMD line version (and it’s working, I just created a system image this evening – about to restore it to check.)
Potential caveat — this was an UPdated machine from 1607 to 1703 to 1709.ย I can’t speak to what might be there on a clean install direct to 1709.
So it’s been deprecated, but not yet removed.ย The chance we take using it now is — it might not be reliable and MS support will do nothing unless you have an extended contract.

AskWoody_MVPOctober 17, 2017 at 9:59 pm #138589Few of the annoyances we’ve found (and fixes) so far that are fresh on my mind with 1709.
We previously disabled fast startup, all of our updated machines turned this back on.ย We do not recommend this setting on towers, or on custom builds.ย The problem now is that with this turned on, the machine goes into hibernation when you “shut down” – and any other users on the machine stay logged on as well as any applications that crashed.ย In fact waking up from this state crashes most of our engineering software that was left running.
On random machines we are seeing multiple settings like Start menu recommendations, lock screen suggestions and ads, etc – being returned to default.ย Other privacy settings seem okay.
And on a specific set of older machines, turning them on with fast startup enabled is causing their network cards to fail.ย Turning fast startup OFF fixes this, or you can get newer NIC drivers.ย In our case we had to update with Intels “catch-all” driver v 22.7.1 – released two weeks ago.ย Either method seem to work.

Why am I not surprised?
Though we are all getting used to seeing this happen, it doesn’t make the practice any less like malware/adware, nor the choice by Microsoft to do it any less heinous.
Remember a few short years ago when we all sought protection from spyware and adware? The irony is thick here… Let us never forget why Windows Defender was originally developed.

Why was Windows Defender originally developed? I thought it was to protect the user against spyware and adware. Was that not the reason?

GuestOctober 17, 2017 at 10:56 pm #138593Win Update DL’d.
Installed to restart.
Told it to restart and it did, without finishing the install.
Update & security showed it needed restart to complete.
Restarted again, same result. Did not finish, still shows needs restart to complete.
Pressed the link to restart. Nothing happens.
It’s all ready to go but won’t complete on a restart.
DL’s from the software page. Much faster. Installed at a good pace. Restart process worked.
Update and security showed two updates, Flash and Definitions (security essentials).
I think it borked Homegroup again, waiting to upgrade the other PC.
Otherwise, it seems ok.b

GuestOctober 17, 2017 at 11:46 pm #138603๐ MY WU is disabled until we are at LEVEL 3. When it’s level 3, I will download and install the update. I only download/install updates when things on Level 3. I wait until all the kinks are worked out. But before I do so I will save stuff on my usb drive stick. Plus with my outlook account-it saves everything except for scanned pics.

GuestOctober 18, 2017 at 2:05 am #138610Just installed the junk via Windows10Upgrade28096.exe on a VM running 1703. While upgrading the Insiders build from 1703 to 1709 via Windows Updates didn’t mess with settings, Windows10Upgrade28096.exe did big time! So be aware of and make sure to verify and re-apply settings as needed.
Another issue to be aware of is that the smart folks at Microsoft removed the MiracastView folder from C:\Windows! The problem here is that MiracastView is stillย registered with the AppX system…. and due to this, Windows fails to uninstall MiracastView each time the computer starts.ย Good job, Microsoft kindergardeners! In order to work around, make sure you back up the C:\Windows\MiracastView folder BEFORE upgrading! After the upgrade has finished, restore the folder, make the TrustedInstaller (NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller) the owner of the folder and its content,ย and reboot again.
Beside all the known issues (i.e. messed up event logs’ security descriptors) that have not been fixed since Win 10 RTM (!!!), a few new issues popped up/returned. For example, a new volume (looks like it’s the EFI partition) has been added to the drive optimize list, but, of course, Windows will never be able to optimize that drive (it’s not NTFS formatted..)! What’s more disturbing is the fact the VMConnect-disconnect issues during Windows start of the VM guestย are back with the FCU version. After ages, they finallyย got it addressed in theย CU version, but, as usual, it takes Microsoft just another update to break it again!ย Yikes! Well, theย noobs at Microsoft try hard to look smart even if they deliver junk and break everything that wasn’t broken before… Cheers!

GuestOctober 18, 2017 at 11:48 pm #138830Sure,
all built-in scheduled tasks that were disableย get re-enabled;
Geolocation service gets re-enabled;
customizedย CMD, PowerShell, and PowerShell ISE shortcuts (i.e. color, font, window settings, etc.) get replaced;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\OperationStatusManager (holding settings for ConfirmationCheckBoxDoForAll and EnthusiastMode) gets removed;
File type/protocol type and other settings stored in the registry (i.e. under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT) get reset so all customizations applied are lost;
you name it. Cheers!

Thanks, Kirsty (and everyone).
Registration went very smoothly.
I’ll be installing the Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 shortly. At least by using a spare solid state drive if anything goes wrong I’ll be able to just reconnect my Windows 7 drive and be back up and running within minutes.
I’ll have to remember to disable that Fast Startup nonsense in Power Options for Windows 10 if I do go back to Windows 7 otherwise the first thing that happens is chkdsk will run when 7 starts. Actually, from memory, I’ve always disabled that in 10 anyway.

GuestOctober 24, 2017 at 3:40 pm #140493Possibly not. They may view the lack of telemetry concerning this machine asking for a security update as a key indicator that it should be force upgraded. To fix the oversight and further assist the end user, for their own good.
Earlier this year we had anecdotal tales of locked down machines being first in the queue for a rollout, while others with unrestricted units waiting several days. But many people discount such observations.
