• Dial Up keeps coming on

    Good Morning,
I recently got a new computer running XP. The first program I load was Norton AntiVirus 07. Soon after that every time I turned on the computer my dial up internet connection would start up. I shut it off and it connects again. I have gone into selective startup and removed everything from the start up list but it keeps happening. How can I find out what process or program is turing on my internet connection? (PS. Norton says everthing is hunky dorey)

Check to see if Windows Update is turned on for Auto and any program that you may have installed.
Also note that some OEM’s, including Sony, have a “Call Home” for hardware and software updates.

Thank you for your quick reply, How do I check the settings for Windows Update?
BTW, in reply to the second response I received from Hans, my Automatic Live Update in Nortons is turned off.
        Thanks again for your help.

You’ll find a link to Windows Automatic Updates in your Control Panel.

Check also for a setting in IE – there is (or used to be) a setting for automatically checking for updates.

You could also start Task Manager and see if you can see what application may be trying to dial out.

Select Start | Settings | Control Panel or Start | Control Panel (whichever is available).
          Open the Security Center.
          Click Automatic Updates.
You can choose between four settings. Select the last one (Turn off Automatic Updates).
Click OK (I suspect that Windows will protest, but it should eventually accept your choice).

Norton AntiVirus will check for updates automatically from time to time.

      Start Norton AntiVirus.
In the Norton AntiVirus tab, click on Settings to expand it.
      Click on Automatic LiveUpdate.
Select the option to disable it.

You can still run LiveUpdate when you want to using Quick Links on the left hand side.
