• Device software error after upgrade to 2004

Based on recent advice from Susan Bradley, I decided to upgrade my Dell Precision Laptop from Windows 10 1903 to Windows 10 2004 today.  I used a saved version of the Windows Update Tool I made on 9-30-2020 to do the update offline.  It took about 40 minutes, and everything seemed to go fine.   The only issue I have seen is an error message in the notifications window “Finish installing device software.”   The problem is that I have no idea what device it is talking about.  I attached an image of the message.

I started the Device Manager, and I clicked on each category of device to see if there were any warnings showing on any of the listed devices.  I saw no warnings.   My printers seem to be working fine.  When I click on the message, it just goes away.   However, it is back the next time I open the notifications window.

I have read that 2004 does not allow certain drivers that don’t have a type of certification included.  Perhaps that is the issue.  However, I cannot find any way to know where to start.   How can I determine what device caused this error message?

    Thanks.

Are there any devices or software that give an error or fail to execute?

I have been trying to found that out.   It is hard when there are many USB devices, in particular, that I use from time and time and don’t even keep connected.  I searched the Windows event logs, and there was an error message associated with an audio interface from Focusrite that I use from time to time.  Device manager showed the device working, but, when I connected it, it did not appear in my audio devices.   I went to the website then downloaded and installed a new USB driver.  Again, the device showed working, but did not show up.  I tried reinstalling the new driver with the device connected.  At first it would not even come on.  But, after unplugging and replugging the USB input, apparently it made some changes.  The device now appears in my sound sources, and it produces sound.

I will have to see if the error message reappears.   I wish there were an easy way to find out what device actually caused the driver error without actually checking every device.

When you click on the “Finish installing device software” message, open the file “C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev” using Notepad.

It should tell you which driver was last updated using the “Finish-Install” action and thus which driver is causing the issue.

Thanks for the tip.   At this point, I no longer have the error message.  I don’t know if it will reappear later.   I also don’t have a file “C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev”.  I do have a file“C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log”.  However, that shows some installs around the time of the error, but all the installs in it have a successful completion.    I will keep this in mind if the error reappears.

I have a Dell Precision laptop (model M4700) that updated today from v1909 to v2004.  In the Check for Updates screen, under options for v2004, it told me that I may need updates to a AMD audio driver (as I recall) and a Western Digital driver.  That PC is off at this time, but I’m pretty sure I remembered those correctly.  I did NOT check the options to install those drivers.  So that might be a hint for you if you need to investigate further.

Fuzzmanks, where did you see these options?  Was this a screen that appeared with the update?  I got no such screen during the update.   After the update completed and it was booting into my logon, I did get a message that some updates were needed and it was pr0ceeding, but nothing specific.  This message went away less than a minute later.

I don’t show any available updates on my Windows Update screen (I did update the latest Windows updates yesterday after I let it check for them after the upgrade.).   I specified don’t check for updates when I did the upgrade from the stored ISO so it would not update to 20H2 instead.

I have not gotten the error message since I wrestled with the Focusrite audio interface yesterday.  That is working now, so I assume it must have been what caused the error.
