Which is to say, it doesn’t seem to go online and check at all when I click on update driver and then search automatically (local and Internet) for drivers. It takes about .2 seconds and then slaps up the Windows has determined its up to date. This has happened on the two systems I’ve tried it on now and I know its not checking the Internet in .2 seconds. So is it broken or is there a different methodology I should be using now besides searching out the drivers myself and placing them locally and then try and hold 7’s hand and lead it to them?

I’m trying to update the drivers for a NIC that is not working very well in 7 but purrs like a kitten with a full tummy in XP, but if I needed it, XP would do a very good job of searching and almost always pull down a more recent driver. The one 7 says is up to date is from Feb. of ’08 and its a RealTek NIC, one of the better companies for releasing updated drivers so there should be an updated driver by now for 7. Correct?

Ok, I just checked and the most recent driver for the NIC has a release date of 12.22.09 so I’ll try the manual method but the question still remains wether or not there is a different approach to updating than the one I’m accustomed to having work well in XP.

      Hi:

You haven’t mentioned if you are using a driver checker program and if so, which one? If you are, it could well be that the driver checker you are using does not support Windows 7 and you may have to check for an update to that program first. Just a thought.

I think he’s using the one in Win 7.

It is entirely up to the vendor to release updated drivers. You should check the vendor site for a new driver.

With Windows 7 Microsoft has made a concerted effort to get vendors to supply updated to be used with Windows Update. Have you tried Windows Update?

I have not tried Windows Update, that’s a good idea and I’ve used it before with XP as well. I’m still wondering why Win 7 doesn’t seem to make any effort at all to actually search the Internet for a driver unlike XP, which seems capable of either update method.

Do you know what port Windows uses when searching? Could it be blocked by your firewall?

I’m running the 11-05-2009 realteck NIC driver and I have had Windows 7 since before that. I didn’t manually install it, nor did I do it with the device manager. I guess it must have come in with Windows updates. It works fine but it’s still older than the one from December.

Using Windows Update to get drivers for your hardware after an install is a must. And it works better for 7 than it did for XP or Vista. With XP and Vista I never let Windows Update download new hardware drivers – they usually broke things. But with Windows 7 I have had very good results with getting working, decent drivers. I recall installing Win 7 on my daughter’s laptop and getting horrible wireless download speeds (the dialup modem I used in the 90s was faster!). Anyway, one of the think that downloaded at that horribly slow speed was the driver for the wireless card in the laptop. Once that installed and I reboot, download speeds were up in the high 100Ks like I expected.

Of course after getting up and running you can always go to the vendor’s site to see if they have more recent drivers.
