A friend is having problems with his WIN 98 system. When he starts the system up, the New Hardware Wizard starts and searches for drivers for USB DEVICE and PCI SERIAL CONTROLLER. We have not been able to “find” the correct driver and the devices get loaded without the driver. HELP.

Have you attached a new device to the PC?

If so were there disks included with the device?

      Have you rtfm?

If positive to all the above, try the manufactures web site for the latest drivers.

No new devices – it is general when it asks for the driver for USB DEVICE but specific when it asks for the PCI SERIAL CONTROLLER. Still need help. Thanks.

I would have thought that these were fairly generic type items that would be on the Win98 cd. Have you tried using it????? groovin

Whilst I can’t comment about the USB device (it should be visible, outside the case), the PCI Serial Controller sounds like a winmodem. Got one in there? I’d feed it the drivers for that when it asks.

If my guess is right I think what is being detected are the controller cards themselves. In my original post I was also assuming that the problem was with devices connected to the ports.

I have a recollection of seeing something on this so will post back to Trabor, if and when I find it.
