Developer’s Kit, ease of use (Access 97)

Hello again folks

The company I work for want to increase the number of copies of a database I’ve built for them, this means either buying more licenses for Access, or getting the Access Developer’s kit and making an executable from the database I’ve built.

Are there any pitfalls in using the Developer’s kit I should be aware of? I know nothing of programming, except a little C++ from years ago. Do I need to understand .dll files or anything similar?

We are considering the Developer’s kit in order to keep costs down with both this and other databases that have been built for use by the company. Is it easy for a novice of little brain to get to grips with?

With the developers kit, you are ok to distribute as many copies of you DB as you like.
I personally use A2000 version and have played about with run-time versions of my DB on others machines.
The documentation provided is not too difficult.
If you’re planning on distributing quite a few versions, then it is best to go with the Developers Edition.
One of the facilities within, is dependency.
If you’re using OCX’s or Activex’s then the dependency file will copy them within your run time file.

So, all I have to do is ‘show’ the developer’s kit where my database is and start the process? Sounds easy if that’s all. I’ll get onto our IT people to order the developer’s kit this afternoon.

I think you will have to purchase the 2000 version which will work on prev versions of Access.
I don’t really know how this works in A97 but the documentation should help you along

Your problem is going to be *getting* the Office 97 developers tools, which are no longer available through Microsoft. Neither is the Developer Edition of Office 2000 for that matter.

Ah well, I like setting people a challenge, and if IT can’t find a copy, we’ll have to buy the licenses, probably Microsoft’s intention all along…..
