dell xps 630i from 8.1 pro to 10

Here is the situation I bought my dell xps 630i with windows vista on it (about a month or so before windows 7 came out). I used windows vista, then when windows 8 came out i upgraded to that with no real problems. I upgraded to windows 8.1 from there.

ok i know upgrades on top of upgrades aren’t exactly the best idea.

Now I want to upgrade to windows 10.

Is my hardware to old?

I have a q6600 quad core cpu.
I have 4 gigs of system ram
i have a 600 gig hard drive.
I have a geforce gtx 750 ti video card

i’d assume i have the hardware requirements met, but that is an assumption.

What are your thoughts?

The follow up question is this:
When I do try to update I get an error of:

0xC1900101 x 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation.

The only thing I can do is hit f9 and that boots me back to windows 8.1

Is it possible to upgrade my computer to windows 10 and if so how do I fix the failure to update problem?

Does MS offer the upgrade via Windows Update?
If so, make an image of Windows 8.1 and try this.

The image is a safety net in the event you need to be back up and running if things don’t work out.
In my opinion, Vista era hardware is a bit old, but that shouldn’t stop one from trying.

As Dell is saying: Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected.

That said, I do not see why it doesn’t work. There is no secure boot on that machine.

Chipset = NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI (C55/MCP51) … not good for Win10 support I suspect. nVidia didn’t even update the driver set for Win8.

2008 PC

If you can get it to work you might think about maxing the RAM to 8GB DDR2. Heck if you keep the PC you ought to max it assuming it is a 64bit OS.

There were some fancy (at the time) keyboard, mouse and monitor options that may not work if you still have original equipment for these peripherals.

Wow, if you still have an original HDD from Dell see if there is a firmware update…I was stunned to see all of them (backup HDD first before applying firmware update). I always like to do the optical drive too but your choice if any. all this stuff may be found under the Vista OS option

If your PC came with a modem card and you are not using it, yank it as one less problem.
