I always delay update until late in the month and manually run Dell update before Windows update has its way with my laptop. This month, Dell updated firmware among other things.

This morning, my delay switch off and Windows started doing its thing, installing one update and reporting other updates in the queue. One of those was Dell Firmware.

I ran Dell update again. It reports my system up-to-date. Windows update show version available is 0.1.10.0. Device Manager reports version 1.8.0 installed. How do I kill Windows attempt to install apparently incorrect firmware?

      Forgot to like the image

Tried wushowhide.diagcab and discovered a shortcoming in my belief about its ability to hide updates. It listed (and hid) the firmware update but did not show any of the available MS updates.

      So, problem solved,

To keep from downloading/installing drivers (at all):

If you have Win11 Pro, use Group Policy (gpedit)
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update -> Manage updates 0ffered from Windows Update

If you have Win11 Home use the Registry Editor (regedit)

Never let Windows update install drivers, firmware, bios…Block these updates (in Pro using GPEdit, in HOME using Device Installation Settings)

And, in the Home version of Windows 11 22H2, just where would one find these “Device Installation Settings”?

I thought that Alex might know of a place besides regedit where there might be some actual device installation settings GUI-wise.

Some folks are leery of going into the registry to do things and much prefer making changes via the GUI. It is those folks that I had in mind when I posed the above question intended to be for Alex, since I quoted Alex.

Alex’s post is a nearly complete duplicate of yours, though!

Device Installation settings is under Settings\System. But it includes all things from other Mfg, such as icons that depict your h/w like printers, and apps from other mfg including drivers. Best to use GP or regedit specific for drivers in WU.

‘That makes ‘some folks’ wise. Being not quite so wise, I triple checked as I went.

For those inexperienced in the registry minefield save the following to a text file and rename it AddDriverBlockToRegistry.reg

              Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

              [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
              "ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate"=dword:00000001

Intelligent people will allow time for mods to proof-read, then double click to run .

      Hi Kevin:

In addition to your problem where Windows Update is offering BIOS firmware updates, note that the  support page for your Inspiron 16 7630 2-in-1 *** at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-16-7630-2-in-1-laptop/drivers currently recommends Dell Inspiron 5430/5630/7430 2-in-1/7630 2-in-1 and Vostro 5630 System BIOS v1.11.0 (released 11-Jan-2023). If you open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter msinfo32 to open your System Information does the “BIOS Version/Date” field show you currently have the recommended BIOS v1.11.0?

If your Device Manager is correct and you have BIOS v1.8.0 (released 13-Sep-2023) then Dell Update v5.1.0 isn’t working correctly.

*** If your Inspiron 16 7630 2-in-1 support page doesn’t display the full list of software and drivers recommended for your system then see my 24-Oct-2023 topic Recommended Updates (View List) Not Displayed on Inspiron 15 5584 Support Page for a possible workaround.

ASIDE: I would advise that you do not allow any Dell utility like SupportAssist or Dell Update to install BIOS updates, even when the correct BIOS update is offered. See my 22-Dec-2023 post in JustinCase45’s Dell Command Update showing incorrect BIOS update version for Precision 3551 about alternate (and safer) ways to update your BIOS which are outlined in the section titled “Installation Instructions” in the release notes <here> for the Inspiron 16 7630 2-in-1 BIOS v1.11.0 installer (Inspiron_5430_5630_7430_7630_Vostro_5630_1.11.0.exe).

When Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x recommends a BIOS update for my Inspiron 5584 I normally download the full offline .exe installer from my support page and save it my desktop, close my browser and all open software, right-click on the .exe installer, and choose “Run as Administrator“. However, some Dell users think that method is still too dangerous and recommend a BIOS update from the BIOS boot menu using a USB stick.
