Hello Everybody,
I’m trying to identify four inputs on the back of my Dell 4600 CPU (attached). The pink one has a little picture of a microphone, but the blue, yellow, and black inputs have pictures of circles and arrows. What are those three inputs for?
I called Dell tech support, big mistake. The fellow seemed to understand what I wanted, and he seemed to be telling me the answer. But the call was outsourced and I couldn’t understand most of what he said. Finally gave up and just thanked him. Tried Dell online help, but didn’t get any hits on searches. Probably could have spent a couple more hours guessing, but gave up. Figured I could get a prompt and trustworthy answer here!
The issue came up when the Ion Turntable arrived. It has what they are calling “RCA Audio Output Cables”, a red and a white connector both poking out of one cable. They attach either to a “turntable input on a home stereo” (which I do not have), or to the “CD or Auxillary input on your computer”. There is a switch on the bottom for selecting which connection is made. From the instructions, it looks like one can choose not to plug them in at all, so long as they don’t touch metal, but they appear to affect whether one can hear the music as it is being digitally transferred.
The FAQ page on the software site http://audacity/sourceforge.net/%5B/url%5D says not to use the microphone input. The outsource guy said to take one of the plugs and try it in all the inputs to see what happens. Not a chance! 
Haven’t plugged it in, turned it on, or installed the software which right off the bat needs upgraded. Not until I understand what I’m doing. The instructions Ion provided are pretty bad, but the software site is good. There’s a FAQ page, upgrade information, and a forum for problems.
