    Hello Everybody,

I’m trying to identify four inputs on the back of my Dell 4600 CPU (attached). The pink one has a little picture of a microphone, but the blue, yellow, and black inputs have pictures of circles and arrows. What are those three inputs for?

I called Dell tech support, big mistake. The fellow seemed to understand what I wanted, and he seemed to be telling me the answer. But the call was outsourced and I couldn’t understand most of what he said. Finally gave up and just thanked him. Tried Dell online help, but didn’t get any hits on searches. Probably could have spent a couple more hours guessing, but gave up. Figured I could get a prompt and trustworthy answer here!

The issue came up when the Ion Turntable arrived. It has what they are calling “RCA Audio Output Cables”, a red and a white connector both poking out of one cable. They attach either to a “turntable input on a home stereo” (which I do not have), or to the “CD or Auxillary input on your computer”. There is a switch on the bottom for selecting which connection is made. From the instructions, it looks like one can choose not to plug them in at all, so long as they don’t touch metal, but they appear to affect whether one can hear the music as it is being digitally transferred.

The FAQ page on the software site http://audacity/sourceforge.net/%5B/url%5D says not to use the microphone input. The outsource guy said to take one of the plugs and try it in all the inputs to see what happens. Not a chance! blowup

Haven’t plugged it in, turned it on, or installed the software which right off the bat needs upgraded. Not until I understand what I’m doing. The instructions Ion provided are pretty bad, but the software site is good. There’s a FAQ page, upgrade information, and a forum for problems.

Well, now that all of you are under your desks looking at the back of your CPUs,
    Thanks!

      Hi kris,
I don’t have a Dell box, so can’t verify just what you pictured but most SoundAudio cards have the following jacks on the back of the card. What colors they would be are not standardized.

      1. Mic In. self explained. Probably what the pink jack one is on your card. Don’t use that one.

      2. SPK/Line OUT. this would be a stereo jack going to of all things, the speakers.

      3. MIDI/Game. This is usually a larger jack for game inputs.

      4. LINE IN. This should be the one to use with the ION.

By your description, they have given you a set of standard RCA type phono plugs which are a larger plug with one center pin and a shell type circular ground arrangement.

The line in jack should be a 3.5 mm stereo pin jack, so you can’t plug the RCAs directly into the sound card. You will need an adapter cable to change the RCA plug into a 3.5mm stereo plug. Most I have seen are a “Y’ type cable with two RCA female jacks and one stereo male pin plug. These are very common and you can probably get one at the local computer shop or Radio Shack or similar store.

I searched on the UK website for the rear view of the Dimension 4600, but didn’t get an identical picture to the one you show (no yellow socket). So maybe you have a counterfeit Dell Dimension 4600?!

Turning to the US website I searched Technical Support for “Dimension 4600 audio card” and the first hit was for an article “What Sound Card Do I Have in My Dell

Counterfeit! scream I bought it right from them and paid a bundle! But that doesn’t exactly say where they get their parts, I guess.

Yes, that describes the RCA cable they sent, and it explains a lot. That short fat connector does not look anything like the other mouse/keyboard/speaker plugs. I will need to get an adapter cable if the turntable sound does not work at all.

I’m going to leave the RCA cable unconnected, fire the thing up and see what happens, soundwise. It may not even be necessary. At least now I know that the blue one is Line In. And I’ve learned how to use the TagPanel.

If you learn something new every day, I have a day off coming. Thanks!

Admitting my trial and error knowledge of this topic, I would add that I agree with the assessment that the (blue) line-in is where you should connect the audio from the turntable. I can add that, as far as I know, the “standard” audio colors are red for right channel stereo and white for left channel stereo or mono. What I’ve done in the past is to pay a visit to a local Radio Shack and get an adapter like Bob mentioned, into which you would plug the red and white cables from the turntable and thence into the line-in on the computer. I don’t think you can hurt anything, audio wise, if you plug something into the wrong socket. You may get nothing or static, but I don’t think the audio signal can harm the turntable or the computer. Keep us posted on how you make out.

      Hi Kris

      I would say

      Pink -Microphone
      Green – Line Out (Speaker)
      Blue – Line-In

I used the Blue one once for putting a tape recorder in the back but it was awful grin

This is the back of an Dell Optiplex GX260 (witha few Jezza alterations evilgrin)
